including social, environmental, and healthcare problems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In particular, our group specializes in developing, characterizing, and applying bio-inspired optimization algorithms for artificial neural networks.\u00a0 These include deep learning, reinforcement learning, evolutionary computation, and meta-learning methods.<\/p>\n<p><!--\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We also close the loop between biological and robotic systems by employing artificial agents as a controlled and repeatable testbed for investigating open hypotheses in the natural sciences, and similarly analyze these artificial learning and evolutionary processes to find patterns that may serve as potential hypotheses for naturalists studying biological systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The lab is directed by Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncheney.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nick Cheney<\/a> in the Computer Science department at UVM, and we are proud to be a core research group within the Vermont Complex Systems Center &#8212;
