University of Vermont College of Medicine Dean Frederick C. Morin III, M.D., and Fletcher Allen Health Care President and CEO John R. Brumsted, M.D., have announced the appointment of Howard Schapiro, M.D., as the interim president of the University of Vermont Medical Group at Fletcher Allen and senior associate dean of clinical affairs at the UVM College of Medicine, effective February 11, 2013. Schapiro, who is health care service leader for anesthesiology at Fletcher Allen and associate professor and chair of anesthesiology at the College of Medicine, will continue in his current roles for a brief interval until an interim leader for anesthesiology is named.

Schapiro earned his medical degree from UVM in 1980 and has spent nearly his entire career in Burlington, Vt., including completing surgical and anesthesiology residencies at the former Medical Center Hospital of Vermont (now Fletcher Allen). He then completed a fellowship in obstetrical anesthesia at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City before returning to UVM/Fletcher Allen as an attending anesthesiologist and assistant professor. Schapiro was promoted to associate professor in 1995 and in 1997, assumed leadership of the Fletcher Allen Health Care Service and UVM Department of Anesthesiology.

Throughout his tenure, Schapiro has been actively involved in the UVM Medical Group, where he is chair of the Finance Committee, and the Fletcher Allen Medical Staff, for which he serves as treasurer. Recently re-elected as treasurer of the Vermont Medical Society, he has been active in numerous national professional societies, including the American Society of Anesthesiology and the International Anesthesia Research Society.

“Dr. Schapiro is committed to continuing the momentum built by the strong work of former Medical Group President and Senior Associate Dean Paul Taheri, M.D., and the UVM Medical Group Board and its chair, Claude Nichols, M.D.,” says Brumsted.

“We are grateful to Dr. Schapiro for his continuing dedication and service to Fletcher Allen and the UVM College of Medicine and welcome him to this new role,” Morin says.
