Class of ’98 Alumna Akbarnia to Receive Early Achievement Award at Reunion 2013

Halleh Akbarnia, M.D.’98, an attending emergency physician at Presence Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, Ill., will receive the Early Achievement Award at the University of Vermont College of Medicine’s Reunion 2013. The award is presented to alumni who have graduate in the past 15 years in recognition of their outstanding community or College service and/or scientific or academic achievement.
Akbarnia, who is celebrating her 15th reunion year, joined the medical staff of Saint Francis Hospital (SFH) in 2007, and is an active member of the SFH Critical Care, Sepsis, and Graduate Medical Education Committees. She served as the chair of the Performance Distinction Committee, representing SFH at the system level, and a member of the Medical Executive Committee from 2010 to 2011. In addition, Akbarnia was awarded the “Non-Medicine Specialist of the Year” for the 2010-2011 year by the graduating 2011 internal medicine residents, and the 2009-2010 “Teacher of the Year” by the Resurrection emergency medicine residents. Prior to joining Saint Francis Hospital, she was assistant medical director at her residency program, Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center-Virginia Commonwealth University Health System in Richmond, Va., and was named “Teacher of the Year” in 2005 by the residents there. Akbarnia serves as a class agent for the UVM College of Medicine Class of 1998.
Akbarnia will receive her award at the “Celebration of Achievements – Legends and Leaders” awards and recognition event that will be held during the College’s Reunion on Friday, May 31, 2013, at 5 p.m. in the Davis Auditorium in the Medical Education Center on Level 2 of the Fletcher Allen Health Care Ambulatory Care Center Campus.
