Sona Jobarteh is the first professional female Kora virtuoso to break through the patrilinear West African Griot traditions. She is from Gambia, and her dynasty carries a formidable reputation for renowned Kora masters, including her grandfather, Amadu Bansang Jobarteh, and her cousin, the legendary Toumani Diabaté. Sona’s skill as an instrumentalist and singer, infectious melodies, and onstage grace have catapulted her to international success. An activist and powerful public speaker, she has devoted her life to education in the arts and beyond, and is the founder of the Gambia Academy, dedicated to post-colonial educational reform in Africa. Once you start listening to her music, you will not be able to stop; it is utterly mesmerizing. The chance to hear this artist and her accomplished band live in our small venue is an extraordinary opportunity.
