Description:
Remains of the Eagle Square sawmill in Fayville. This image shows the long root of a yellow birch tree reaching way down for sustenance along the still-standing stone wall of the Eagle Square sawmill. Ferns grow in the center of the foundation and leafy deciduous trees surround the area. A man is standing on the right of the foundation peering down toward the tree roots. The saw mill was built prior to 1869 when it shows up on a Beers Atlas map. Eagle Square, was one of Vermont's oldest industries, having started in South Shaftsbury in the 1820s; it was purchased by Stanley Tools in 1916, and the latter withdrew with 160 jobs in 2002.
