Computers at UVM

UVM Laptop Requirements

Access to a computer is critical for our students' success, both in and out of class. Beginning Fall 2020, all UVM students are required to have a laptop that meets the minimum specifications outlined below. Please note that Chromebooks, iPads and Android Tablets are not recommended as a primary computing device.

Minimum hardware specs

  • Laptop or tablet running Windows 10 Pro or the latest version of macOS
  • Intel® Core i7™ 8th-generation (2018) quad-core processor or higher
  • 16 GB memory (RAM)
  • 256 GB Solid State Drive (SSD)¬†or larger
  • 1920 x 1080 Full HD Graphics (FHD) or better
  • Built-In or USB HD Webcam (≥720p)

Optional features and add-ons

  • Ethernet port or plug-in adapter (Wi-Fi may not be available in all areas) and an Ethernet cable of at least 25 feet for use in residence halls.
  • USB storage device such as an external hard drives or flash drive(s) for backing up data.
  • For presentations and other academic needs, you may need a suitable plug-in video adapter (e.g., USB-C to HDMI). The UVM Techstore carries several popular types of adapter cables.

Need to get software support or repair of your Apple or Dell computer?

  • Visit the UVM Client Services Carry-In Clinic located on the first floor of the Ira Allen Chapel, room I-117. The Tech Team provides in-person diagnosis and repair of most software problems, while the Hardware Team is an authorized service provider of Apple computers and select Dell computers.
  • Submit an online Help Request.
  • Call the UVM Helpline at (802) 656-2604.
