Computers at UVM

Suggested Student Computer Specifications

The minimum specifications are intended if you already own a computer and are not currently planning a purchase. The recommended specifications should be considered if you’re contemplating a purchase.

Minimum required hardware specs

  • Latop or tablet running Windows 10,
    or a Mac running macOS 10.12 "Sierra"
  • Intel Core i5 processor
  • 8 GB memory (RAM)
  • 128 GB Solid State Drive (SSD)

Recommended hardware specs

  • Laptop or tablet running Windows 10 Pro or higher,
    or a Mac running the latest version of macOS
  • Intel Core i7 quad-core processor or higher
  • 16 GB memory (RAM)
  • 256 GB Solid State Drive (SSD)


  • Ethernet port or plug-in adapter (Wi-Fi may not be available in all areas) and an Ethernet cable of at least 25 feet for use in residence halls.
  • USB storage devices such as external hard drives or thumb drives for backing up data.

Consult your college or school for their recommended specifications.
