Course Teams Update for Summer 2021

We hope that you and your students have found Microsoft Teams to be a useful tool this semester. As we approach the end of the spring semester and the start of the summer session, we want to share our plans for managing the lifecycle of course-based teams.  We have tried to align our approach to Teams with the lifecycle of Blackboard course sites, but because these are very different technologies, some implementation details will differ.

Spring 2021 Course Teams

Teams corresponding to spring 2021 courses will continue to be accessible through the end of May. In June, these course teams will be archived, which comprises the following changes:

  • We will rename course teams with the prefix “Exp0521_” (where “0521” means May 2021).
  • We will remove all students from spring course-based teams.
  • Course teams will move out of your list of active teams.

Course instructors can restore archived teams from within the Manage Teams screen in Teams. The restored team will then appear in the active teams list under Hidden Teams. Course instructors can then access content and add students to the team if needed, for example to finish incomplete work. Those students will then see the team under Hidden Teams in their own view. If you or a student want to return the team to the main list of teams, simply unhide the team. We have a Knowledge Base article that covers this process

When access is no longer required, instructors can archive the team again from the Manage Teams screen.

Note: Please do not delete course teams. 

We anticipate removing course teams programmatically in coordination with the removal of Blackboard course sites, currently after two years.


Summer 2021 course teams

To make courses available in time for the summer session, which starts May 24th, we will be creating the course teams for the summer session starting on Monday, May 17th. These new course teams will appear at the bottom of your current active teams. You can rearrange your teams list to your preferred order.

Note: Please do not delete course teams. 

If you don’t want to see a course team, please Hide the team instead. We have a Knowledge Base article that covers many aspects of Setting up your class team. Here are some important points:

  • The sync process updates membership of class teams three times each day using data from the Registrar’s Office and Banner.
  • Students can’t see or access a team until an instructor activates the team. This is a one-way operation; we can’t deactivate a team if you activate it.
  • Please don’t activate course teams until close to the start of the term.
  • Please don’t schedule course meetings until the team has been activated, or students will get errors when they try to access the meeting or team.
