Network Folders on Windows 8 or 10

Network Folders on Windows 8 or 10

Browsing a Network Folder

When an employee logs into a computer that is part of the Campus domain, she will find that drive S: is automatically mapped to a network folder containing shared departmental folders. We often refer to this as the “Shared Drive.”

If you need to access the Shared Drive without a drive mapping, you can enter a simple UNC folder path in the address bar in Windows File Explorer, like so:

(Windows 10 icons look a little different, but other appearances and function are otherwise the same.)

You may be prompted to enter a username and password. Make sure that you add campus\ before your netid if you don't already see domain: campus below the password field. (Of course, you'll use your own netid and password.)

Mapping a Network Folder to a Drive Letter

If you prefer, you can map a drive letter to the network folder, and you can even have the drive mapping reconnect each time you log on. To start, open Windows File Explorer, and select Computer in the Navigation Pane (left column) if it isn't already selected.

Now, either click the Map network drive button on the ribbon, or right-click This PC and then select Map network drive….

In the Map Network Drive Window that opens, do the following:

  • Select the desired drive letter.
  • Enter the UNC path to the network shared folder.
  • Indicate whether you want the drive mapping to reconnect when you logon.
  • You may need to use different credentials if the account with which you are currently logged into Windows doesn'y have access to the network folder.

If you have selected Connect using different credentials, you will be prompted for a username and password. When completed, a new Windows File Explorer window will open, showing the contents of the newly mapped drive.

You can also find the drive listed under This Computer in File Explorer.
