

{"id":9319,"date":"2018-06-18T18:05:38","date_gmt":"2018-06-18T18:05:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kb.helpline.w3.uvm.edu\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=9319"},"modified":"2026-02-24T15:16:22","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:16:22","slug":"getting-connected-at-uvm","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/getting-connected-at-uvm\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting Connected at UVM"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Connecting via Wi-Fi<\/h2>\n<p>There are 3 wireless networks available on UVM campus:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Eduroam<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Current Students, Staff, Faculty, and other UVM employees with active NetIDs should use the Eduroam wireless network.<\/li>\n<li>Eduroam allows users (researchers, teachers, students, staff) from participating institutions to securely access the Internet from any eduroam-enabled institution.<\/li>\n<li>This means visitors from other eduroam-enabled institutions can sign into Eduroam on UVM campus with their universities&#8217; credentials.<\/li>\n<li>To connect to Eduroam, enter <em>your<\/em>\u00a0<em>netid<\/em>\u00a0and NetID password when authenticating.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/connect-to-eduroam\/\">Eduroam connection instructions can be found here.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>UVM<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>UVM wireless was once the preferred Wi-Fi network on campus, but Eduroam can now be used instead in almost all cases.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/kb.helpline.w3.uvm.edu\/article\/connect-to-uvm-wireless\">UVM Wireless connection instructions can be found here.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>UVM Guest<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Visitors to UVM campus who are not coming from an eduroam-enabled university should use the UVM Guest network.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/kb.helpline.w3.uvm.edu\/article\/uvm-guest\">UVM Guest connection instructions can be found here.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What will\/won&#8217;t connect<\/h2>\n<p>Some devices may not be compatible with the the wireless networks on campus. For more information about why this is and which devices may be incompatible, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/kb.helpline.w3.uvm.edu\/article\/device-wifi-compatibility\">Wi-Fi Compatibility<\/a> guide.<\/p>\n<p>Many devices that are unable to connect to eduroam can connect to the wired network (see below).<\/p>\n<h2>Connecting via Ethernet (wired network)<\/h2>\n<p>A wired connection provides a faster, more reliable, and more consistent connection, and is recommended whenever possible.<\/p>\n<p>If you are connecting in a dorm, please see our article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/reshall-ports\">res-hall ports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you are connecting in an office or lab, consult your department&#8217;s business manager to obtain an Ethernet cable, obtain a compatible adapter or docking station for your device, and to ensure the ports are enabled.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Connecting via Wi-Fi There are 3 wireless networks available on UVM campus: Eduroam Current Students, Staff, Faculty, and other UVM employees with active NetIDs should use the Eduroam wireless network.
