Each device has one or more authentication options available. any protected resource. We have implemented MFA to protect you, your information, and the University&#8217;s information.<\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>How do I use Duo with a departmental account? <\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>When enrolling a device in Duo Mobile, you are not able to associate the same phone number with multiple accounts.<\/p>\n<p>To work around this using your tablet <em>or your smartphone<\/em>, follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/duo-multi-factor-authentication\/#enroll-your-ipad-or-android-tablet\">instructions above for enrolling an iPad or Android Tablet<\/a>. Every day, members of the UVM community fall prey to phishing scams. Additionally, phishing attempts are not the only methods hackers employ to obtain credentials, and multi-factor authentication is the best protection available against all forms of password compromise.<\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Can more than one person register a phone we share?<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>This option is not currently available.<\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Will it cost me anything to use multi-factor authentication?<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>It depends on which method you use, but it is highly likely that the cost will be effectively none.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Duo Mobile app itself is free.<\/li>\n<li>Generating a code with the Duo Mobile app is free.<\/li>\n<li>Generating a list of one-time codes from the Multifactor setup page is free.<\/li>\n<li>If you are connected to Wi-Fi, using the <strong>push<\/strong> method is free.<\/li>\n<li>If you are not on Wi-Fi, the <strong>push<\/strong> method uses a very small amount of data, and is still effectively free depending on your cellular data plan.<\/li>\n<li>Phone calls and SMS may have costs associated depending on your cellular plan.<\/li>\n<li>A YubiKey or FIDO2 security key comes with a one-time charge of approximately $50.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Can I use security questions instead?<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>UVM is requiring multi-factor authentication to solve the problem of stolen, reusable credentials like passwords.<\/p>\n<p>Security questions are no different from passwords in that an attacker who captures your answers to those questions via phishing, other social engineering, or malware can use them to impersonate you. The framework UVM has adopted protects against this in one of two ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>by requiring that you have a physical device (smartphone\/tablet with Duo Mobile app or security key), or<\/li>\n<li>by requiring a credential which is only good for a single use (the <strong>offline codes<\/strong> method).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>What if I don\u2019t have a smartphone or tablet?<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>If you are an employee, your department can <a href=\"#request-a-yubikey\">request a YubiKey for you<\/a>. A YubiKey is a very small device that fits on a key ring and is easy to carry around.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a student, you may provide your own FIDO2 security key and <span class=\"s1\">enroll it using the <a href=\"#hardware-key\">self-service instructions found above<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You may also generate a list of offline codes to keep with you as a backup &#8211; they are not recommended as a primary authentication method.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, you may submit an exemption request from the no telephony policy by filling out the <a href=\"https:\/\/go.uvm.edu\/duotelephony\">no-telephony exception form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Can I set up Duo on more than one device?<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>You are encouraged, but not required, to set up Duo on more than one device. This will allow you to still access Duo-protected services if you forget one of your devices at home, and it will make it easier to unenroll a lost or stolen device to prevent others from using it to log in as you.<\/p>\n<p>You may add as many devices as you like on the <a href=\"https:\/\/uvm.login.duosecurity.com\/devices\">device management page<\/a>.
