See the Additional Options settings below.<\/p>\n<p>Students can be a member of multiple groups in a course.<\/p>\n<h2>Create Groups<\/h2>\n<h3>First, create a Category<\/h3>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--alert  hts-messages--withtitle hts-messages--withicon \"   >\r\n    \t\t\t<span class=\"hts-messages__title\">Group Categories<\/span>    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\t<p>\r\n    \t\t\t\t\tThe group <strong>category<\/strong> is the organizing purpose of the group. For instance, in a class of 40 students, there might have 8 &#8220;discussion&#8221; groups with 5 members each, but then also have 20 &#8220;project&#8221; groups with 2 people each. You would create a category for each type of group<br \/>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/p>\r\n    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\r\n    \t\t<\/div><!-- \/.ht-shortcodes-messages -->\r\n    \t\t\n<h3>Create Group Category and Set Up Groups<\/h3>\n<p>Navigate to &#8220;<strong>Course Tools<\/strong>&#8221; on the Brightspace menu, select &#8220;<strong>Groups<\/strong>&#8221; to open the Manage Groups dashboard. Select &#8220;<strong>New Category<\/strong>&#8220;.<br \/>\n<\/a>Type in a name for the category. You have the option to add a description for the groups. In addition, there are a number of options for &#8220;Enrollment Types:&#8221; <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong># of Groups \u2013 No Auto Enrollments<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 set the number of groups, and\u00a0the instructor will manually assign students<\/li>\n<li><strong>Groups of #<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 set the group capacity, i.e. \u201cgroups of 4\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong># of Groups<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 set a group limit, i.e. \u201c7 groups total\u201d and students will be randomly distributed by Brightspace<\/li>\n<li><strong>Groups of # \u2013 Self Enrollment<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 set the group capacity and allow students to self-enroll<\/li>\n<li><strong># of Groups, Capacity of # \u2013 Self Enrollment<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 set the group capacity and number of groups, and allow students to self-enroll<\/li>\n<li><strong>Single user, member-specific groups<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 set up groups of 1<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Depending on which Enrollment Type you chose, you will have fields to fill in regarding the number of groups, number of users, and other enrollment-related options.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/community.d2l.com\/brightspace\/kb\/articles\/3483-create-and-manage-categories-and-groups\">Brightspace Community site offers more explanation of the group types.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>View and Modify Enrollments<\/h2>\n<h3>Modify group enrollments<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Go to the Groups page and choose the group category from &#8220;View Categories&#8221; (if you have more than one category)<\/li>\n<li>Click the dropdown arrow next to the category name and choose &#8220;Enroll Users&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Here you can see your class and all the groups, so you can modify students&#8217; groups by changing which column is checked for them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>View group enrollments<\/h3>\n<p>To see all members of a group:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Go to Course Tools > Groups<\/li>\n<li>Click on the number, under the Members column, to see who is enrolled<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To identify which group (or groups) an individual student is in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Go to Grades &#038; Feedback > Classlist<\/li>\n<li>Click the drop down arrow next to the student&#8217;s name and choose &#8220;View Groups&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--alert  hts-messages--withtitle hts-messages--withicon \"   >\r\n    \t\t\t<span class=\"hts-messages__title\">Self-enrollment<\/span>    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\t<p>\r\n    \t\t\t\t\tIf you created a <strong>self-enrollment group<\/strong>, you can create a link to the group in Content, Announcements or anywhere you have the HTML Editor to add Quick Links\u00a0 so students can enroll in the group of their choosing.     \t\t\t\t<\/p>\r\n    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\r\n    \t\t<\/div><!-- \/.ht-shortcodes-messages -->\r\n    \t\t\n<h2>Create Assignments, Quizzes, or Discussions for Groups<\/h2>\n<h3>For Assignments (and Quizzes)<\/h3>\n<p>In some cases you want each group to have a different assignment. In other cases, you might want all groups to get the same assignment to work on and submit as a group where any member of a group can submit files to a group folder. Group members may be given a common grade by default, but you can edit individual grades in the Grade Book.<\/p>\n<h4>For a unique assignment for each group:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Click Course Tools and choose either Assignments or Quizzes<\/li>\n<li>Create\/edit the specific assignment<\/li>\n<li>Click Availability Dates &amp; Conditions on the right<\/li>\n<li>Click Add Release Condition > Create New<\/li>\n<li>Select Condition Type<\/li>\n<li>Choose Classlist > Group Enrollment<\/li>\n<li>Select the group from the dropdown list and click &#8220;Create&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>To create one assignment that all groups will do:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Edit the Assignment<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Submission &#038; Completion<\/strong> on the right<\/li>\n<li>Select &#8220;Group Assignment&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Choose the correct group category (e.g. &#8220;project groups&#8221; or whatever category you created when creating the groups in the group tool)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>In the Discussion Tool<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Create or edit a Forum and give it a title<\/li>\n<li>Click on the Restriction tab<\/li>\n<li>Scroll down to Release Conditions and select Create &#038; Attach<\/li>\n<li>View the dropdown for Select Condition Type<\/li>\n<li>Go to Classlist > Group enrollment<\/li>\n<li>Select either a group category or an individual group<\/li>\n<li>Click Create<\/li>\n<li>Choose your other forum settings and save and close<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Grading by Group<\/h2>\n<p>Within each tool&#8217;s grade page, you can filter by groups to isolate just those students<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the grading page for each tool, where it defaults to User (all students), choose Groups and click &#8220;Apply&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Next, select the individual group and click &#8220;Apply&#8221; again<\/li>\n<li>To revert back to the entire class, just click &#8220;User&#8221; and &#8220;Apply&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For the Grade Book, the same filter option exists.
