(However, since each question you&#8217;ll be adding has a point value, if you like, you can wait to enter the total points possible until after you&#8217;ve added questions.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Important:<\/strong> Select the <strong>Due Date<\/strong>. Due dates throughout Brightspace are useful because they&#8217;re automatically entered on students&#8217; calendars. To add questions and choose appropriate settings, see the next sections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--**--**--**----**----**----**----**----**----**----**--><\/p>\n<hr style=\"border-top: 1px solid #252525; margin-top: 50px; margin-bottom: 60px;\" \/>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 28px;\">Create and Manage Questions<\/h2>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p>You have the option to either create questions within the quiz or in the Question Library. If you create them in sections within the question library, you have the option to reuse them and, more importantly, create group sets for randomization so each student gets a unique quiz.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 23px;\">Create Questions in the Question Library<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Click on the Question Library tab at top of main quiz landing page.<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;New&#8221; and select Section. <em>(Sections are essentially folders.)<\/em> You may want sections about specific types of question topics. (It will only search courses you have access to) and click <strong>&#8220;Search&#8221;<\/strong>. When you&#8217;ve selected the course you want to copy from, click the <strong>&#8220;Add Selected&#8221;<\/strong> button at the bottom.<\/li>\n<li>Now that the course you&#8217;re copying from is listed under &#8220;Course to Copy,&#8221; click the <strong>&#8220;Select Component&#8221;<\/strong> button at the bottom of page.<\/li>\n<li>Scroll down to either Quizzes (to copy all questions in a quiz) or Question Library (to choose specific questions). You can click the (+) to <strong>&#8220;Expand All&#8221;<\/strong> and see what&#8217;s available to select. Check the questions or sections you want, and click continue.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Finish<\/strong>. This may take a few minutes to complete. Once the copying is completed, you can find your copied elements either in the Quiz list or in the Question Library.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 23px;\">Move questions from existing Quizzes into the Question Library within same course<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/importfromquizzes.png\" rel=\"lightbox-7\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-25840\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0; padding-bottom: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/importfromquizzes-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0; padding-top: 0; padding-bottom: 30px; font-weight: bold;\">Click to enlarge \u2191<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>On the Quiz page click the <strong>Question Library<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Import<\/strong> and <strong>&#8220;Browse Existing Questions.&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the upper right, you should see one of your Quiz titles displayed. <em>Click on it<\/em> to view all quizzes. Choose the quiz you want to extract questions from and choose the questions or select all. You can, instead, click the question types, or choose other methods of filtering.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 23px;\">Convert Questions from a Word Document<\/h3>\n<p>There is a handy tool to generate Brightspace-ready questions from a Word Document.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/plato.algonquincollege.com\/BrightspaceQuizGenerator\/\">Algonquin College Brightspace Test\/Quiz Question Generator<\/a>. Once you click on this converter, you can read the directions for formatting your questions, or view sample questions, and when you paste in your own, as long as they are properly formatted, click &#8220;Generate Test Questions.&#8221; You will then get a file that can be Imported into your quiz (or Question Library).Next, go to edit your quiz and to add your questions to the question area, choose &#8220;Add Existing&#8221; and &#8220;Upload File&#8221; choosing the csv file that you downloaded from the generator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--alert   hts-messages--withicon \"   >\r\n    \t\t\t    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\t<p>\r\n    \t\t\t\t\tNote: If you originally built MC questions with the correct answers in random positions, great! If you did it differently, say, with all correct answers in the &#8220;A&#8221; position expecting the quiz\/test tool itself will randomize them, be sure to spot check them. Once the questions are in Brightspace, drill down to edit a few MC questions just to make sure &#8220;Randomize answer order&#8221; is selected.    \t\t\t\t<\/p>\r\n    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\r\n    \t\t<\/div><!-- \/.ht-shortcodes-messages -->\r\n    \t\t\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 23px;\">Zero point quiz questions<\/h3>\n<p>Instructors can now assign 0 (zero) points to a quiz question to collect non-graded information, feedback or personal input.<\/p>\n<p>This feature eliminates the need for workarounds such as assigning 0.01 points or manually adjusting scores after submission. Enter the special access <strong>Due Date<\/strong> and, if necessary, adjust the available <strong>Start Date<\/strong> and <strong>End Date<\/strong>. Scroll down to the <strong>Users<\/strong> section and select the student(s) who will have this special access. Click <strong>Save<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Optional: Enter a <strong>Password<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 23px;\">Visibility: Hide a Quiz or Make it Visible<\/h3>\n<p>(Note: The visibility setting is not found in this exact section, but it&#8217;s included here for its relevance to making Quizzes available.)<br \/>\n<strong>Hidden\/Visible overrides any other setting<\/strong>. So, if a quiz is set to be &#8220;Hidden,&#8221; students won&#8217;t be able to see it even after the availability date begins (see availability dates above). You can also hide and reveal it where it&#8217;s linked in a Content Module.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Bear in mind that hiding is only controlled <em>manually<\/em> by you or a TA. You will have to manually set it to visible.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 23px;\">Timing &amp; Display<\/h3>\n<p>In the <strong>Timing &amp; Display<\/strong>\u00a0area, select a timing option for the quiz:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>For an untimed quiz, <em>uncheck<\/em> &#8220;Set Time Limit&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>If you do want to &#8220;Set Time Limit&#8221; you have several options to select\n<ul>\n<li>Enter the minutes<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;Timer Settings&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Choose from the settings described and click &#8220;OK&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Note: The grace period option no longer exists<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Choose Paging option &#8211; how many questions displayed per page<\/li>\n<li>Choose whether to shuffle the questions<\/li>\n<li>Display: Hints are optional additions you can add to questions<\/li>\n<li>Disabling Email, etc. is not effective as it only pertains to Brightspace tools<\/li>\n<li>Header and Footer are optional, but be aware that if you choose to display one question per page, the header and footer will appear on each page.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 23px;\">Attempts &amp; Completion<\/h3>\n<p>In the <strong>Attempts &amp; Completion<\/strong> drop-down, you can do any of the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To change the number of attempts allowed, click <strong>Manage Attempts.<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Set how many attempts a learner can make on a quiz.<\/li>\n<li>To allow learners to only retake incorrect questions, select the <strong>On new attempts, only allow answers for previously incorrect questions<\/strong> checkbox. For more information on how this affects learners, refer to <a class=\"MCXref xref\" href=\"https:\/\/community.d2l.com\/brightspace\/kb\/articles\/27518-retake-incorrect-quiz-questions-in-subsequent-attempts?searchString=retake%20incorrect%20questions%20in%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Retake incorrect questions in subsequent attempts<\/a><\/li>\n<li>If the number of attempts allowed is greater than 1, you must determine how the final grade is calculated. From the <strong>Overall Grade Calculation<\/strong> drop-down menu, select one of the following options:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Highest Attempt<\/strong> &#8211; Only the attempt with the highest grade is used as the final grade.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lowest Attempt<\/strong> &#8211; Only the attempt with the lowest grade is used as the final grade.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Average of all Attempts<\/strong> &#8211; The average of the grades on all attempts is calculated and used as the final grade.<\/li>\n<li><strong>First Attempt<\/strong> &#8211; Only the grade on the first attempt is used as the final grade.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Last Attempt<\/strong> &#8211; Only the grade on the last attempt is used as the final grade.<\/li>\n<li>If the number of attempts allowed is greater than 1, an optional feature under <strong>+ Attempt Conditions<\/strong>\u00a0allows you to determine minimum and\/or maximum scores that must be achieved by the learner to obtain the additional attempts.<br \/>\n<strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0If you enter a minimum score, then learners must achieve that set minimum score to receive the subsequent attempt. For example, if you only want learners who receive greater than 50% to receive a subsequent attempt, you can enter that value in the <strong>Min %<\/strong> field.<br \/>\nIf you enter a maximum score, then learners can achieve up to that limit to receive subsequent attempts, but not greater than that limit. For example, if you only want learners who receive below 80% on the quiz to receive an additional attempt, you can enter that value in the <strong>Max % <\/strong>field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Category:<br \/>\nCategories of quizzes can be set up on the Quiz page so that you can organize them into related chunks. This setting must be turned on for grades to be automatically sent to the grade book and for the default submission view to be released to users when they complete an attempt. <strong><em>Do not select this<\/em> if you have Written Response question types. (See alert box above.)<\/strong> You have the option to publish grades after the due date or other time you choose. By default, you see 20 students. If you have more, change the page to display all of them. This is done at the bottom of the page, e.g. if you have 175 students, choose to display 200. These steps will remove their attempt entirely:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to <strong>Course Tools &gt; Quizzes<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click the dropdown menu next to the quiz title and select &#8220;<strong>Grade<\/strong>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>Check the box next to the student&#8217;s attempt and click &#8220;Delete&#8221; above the student list.<\/li>\n<li>To delete all of them, make sure you change the setting at the bottom right of page that indicates how many students are listed on each page in order to display all of them on one page. (Because &#8220;Select All&#8221; only selects those names on the current page, but not the names on additional pages.)<\/li>\n<li>Once the entire roster is shown, select all students and attempts by choosing the top\/left checkbox above the roster.<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;<strong>Delete<\/strong>&#8221; just above and confirm &#8220;<strong>Yes<\/strong>&#8220;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4 style=\"font-size: 24px; margin-top: 40px;\">Correcting and Regrading a Quiz<\/h4>\n<p>When you discover that a question is incorrect you can simply edit it if no one has taken the quiz yet. However, if some or all students have taken it, there are some extra steps.<\/p>\n<h5>Correcting questions <em>after<\/em> quiz has been taken by some or all students<\/h5>\n<p>Step one is to correct the question within the quiz:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to <strong>Course Tools &gt; Quizzes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click the name of the quiz.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the question to edit. Make your change.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5>Next, update questions\/grades on quizzes that have <em>already been taken<\/em>.<\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to <strong>Course Tools &gt; Quizzes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the dropdown menu for the quiz, choose <strong>Grade<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click to view the <strong>Questions<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n<li>Select \u201c<strong>Update All Attempts<\/strong>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Note: when you corrected the question in the quiz in step 1, Brightspace kept the original version down below under <strong>&#8220;Questions that are not in the quiz anymore.&#8221;<\/strong>Some or all student may have already answered this question that&#8217;s not in the current quiz anymore, and <em>THAT&#8217;S<\/em> the question you&#8217;ll be editing next. Click on the question.<\/li>\n<li>This next part varies according to question type. For a multiple choice question (where the wrong answer was selected to be the correct one), you&#8217;ll essentially want to give points to students who chose the actual correct answer and eliminate points if they selected the erroneously-chosen &#8220;correct&#8221; answer. So,\n<ol>\n<li>Give points to attempts with answer X [choose what is <em>actually<\/em> the correct answer] and enter the number of points they should have received for it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Save<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Now, give to attempts with answer y [the incorrect answer which had been erroneously set as the correct one] and enter 0 points.<\/li>\n<li>Leave a comment explaining the correction in the comment field.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Save<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Each question type has slightly different options for making adjustments.     \t\t<div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--alert   hts-messages--withicon \"   >\r\n    \t\t\t    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\t<p>\r\n    \t\t\t\t\tNOTE: Matching questions settings: If the question was originally set to &#8220;All or nothing&#8221; this cannot be changed to partial credit after students have taken the quiz. For instance, you can choose to show partial results upon submission and more at a later time, e.g. after the due date.<\/p>\n<h3>Consider the simplest setting, first<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-27698\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/basicsettings.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"423\" \/><br \/>\nOn the Quiz Edit page, under Evaluation and Feedback, there are 3 boxes you might choose to tick:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Check <strong>&#8220;Auto-publish attempt results immediately upon completion&#8221;<\/strong> if you want students to see grades instantly upon submitting (and if you have no written response questions &#8211; see yellow warning box, below).<\/li>\n<li>Check <strong>&#8220;Synchronize to the grade book&#8221;<\/strong> if you want the grades to appear in the grade book. Keep in mind that even if you do choose this, students will see their scores if they open the quiz again, unless you refrain from publishing them (step 1).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Attempt Grade<\/strong> should be checked in order for them to see their overall quiz grade, but then click the drop down arrow just below and decide whether they&#8217;ll see the questions, what they got right and\/or other options.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These are the basic display settings for quiz results. If you want to customize them further, then review the various options, below.<\/p>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--danger  hts-messages--withtitle hts-messages--withicon \"   >\r\n    \t\t\t<span class=\"hts-messages__title\">Beware of the the Auto Publish Setting:<\/span>    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\t<p>\r\n    \t\t\t\t\tBy default, the option <em>&#8220;Auto-publish attempt results immediately upon completion&#8221;<\/em> is ON. However, <strong>Written Response (WR) questions<\/strong> are initially valued as &#8220;0&#8221; until you enter a grade for them. <span style=\"color: #b40a0a;\">Example: If a test is worth 100pts, and if the WR question is worth 40pts, the grade a student will see immediately upon submission will be <em>60 or lower<\/em>.<\/span> After you grade the WR questions, and publish the new grades, their test scores will be updated, but in the meantime students will most likely panic! Therefore, if you have any WR questions, be sure to <strong>deselect &#8220;Auto publish&#8221;<\/strong>. Note, when you&#8217;ve chosen to display quiz grades to student at a future date, they&#8217;ll be able to access them at that point in a few places (on the quiz page, in Class Progress, and in the Grade Book).
