For devices that are enrolled in UVM&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/apple-dep\/\">Apple Device Enrollment Program<\/a>, this process is mostly automated, but it&#8217;s still possible on UVM-owned, non-DEP-enrolled Macs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For installation using a Internet Recovery<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A wired UVM network connection with a valid 132.198.0.0\/16 address.<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/shop\/product\/MC704LL\/A\/apple-usb-ethernet-adapter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USB to Ethernet<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/shop\/product\/HJKF2ZM\/A\/belkin-usb-c-to-gigabit-ethernet-adapter\">USB-C to Ethernet adapter<\/a>. The Tech Team has occasionally noticed issues when using non-Apple USB adapters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For installation using a bootable USB disk<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A USB flash drive or SD card with adequate capacity. As of MacOS 12 Monterey, the minimum size required is 12GB.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Installation<\/h2>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Using Internet Recovery on UVM Campus<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Enter Internet Recovery. Apple has a guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT204904\">how to access macOS Internet recovery<\/a> in Mac devices with both Intel and Apple processors. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/connect-to-uvm-wireless\/\">main UVM wireless network<\/a> is not usable for this, as while within macOS Recovery, the computer is not able to correctly store the security certificate. As such, it&#8217;s recommended that this process is completed while the computer is connected to UVM&#8217;s wired network.<\/li>\n<li>Erase the computer&#8217;s drive.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/step1a.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox-1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22419 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/step1a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"321\" height=\"142\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/step1a.jpg 759w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/step1a-300x133.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/step1a-50x22.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/step1a-60x27.jpg 60w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/step1a-100x44.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 321px) 100vw, 321px\" \/><\/a>\n<ol>\n<li>If you&#8217;re using a Mac with an Apple chipset, this can be done by clicking the &#8220;Recovery Assistant&#8221; tab in the upper left, then selecting &#8220;Erase Mac,&#8221; and following that process by continuing to select the &#8220;Erase Mac&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/step2a.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox-2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-22420 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/step2a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/step2a.jpg 544w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/step2a-300x286.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/step2a-50x48.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/step2a-60x57.jpg 60w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/step2a-100x95.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a>option.<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re using a Mac with an Intel processor, you should instead use the Disk Utility options within MacOS Recovery to erase the drive. Apple has a <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT201372\">guide for creating a bootable USB<\/a> for different versions of MacOS.<\/li>\n<li>When turning on the computer, boot into the USB drive. This can be done by entering startup options, as described in the &#8220;Use the bootable installer&#8221; section of the above article.<\/li>\n<li>Open Disk Utility to erase the computer&#8217;s drive.<\/li>\n<li>Select View &gt; Show All Devices, then select the root drive (typically named APPLE SSD Media or some variation) and choose &#8220;Erase.&#8221; You may leave the disk name as &#8220;Untitled.&#8221;<br \/> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/images456.png\" rel=\"lightbox-3\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-22428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/images456-1024x431.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"643\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/images456-1024x431.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/images456-300x126.png 300w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/images456-768x323.png 768w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/images456-50x21.png 50w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/images456-1536x647.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/images456-2048x863.png 2048w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/images456-60x25.png 60w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/images456-100x42.png 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 643px) 100vw, 643px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Finally, exit Disk Utility and select Reinstall MacOS Monterey from the main MacOS Recovery window.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n<h2>Post-Installation Setup<\/h2>\n<p>For UVM-owned computers, policy enrollment through Jamf is necessary to automatically install software like the Microsoft Office suite, install <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/managed-software-center\/\">Managed Software Center<\/a>, and enforce automatic FileVault encryption.<\/p>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>DEP Enrolled<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--info  hts-messages--withtitle hts-messages--withicon \"   >\n    \t\t\t<span class=\"hts-messages__title\">Most 2017 or newer UVM-owned MacOS devices are DEP enrolled.<\/span>\n    \t\t<\/div>\n<p><!-- \/.ht-shortcodes-messages -->\n    \t\t<\/p>\n<p>If the machine is a UVM-owned machine enrolled with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/apple-dep\/\">Apple&#8217;s Device Enrollment Program<\/a>, you&#8217;ll be prompted to enter your netID and password during the setup process. Ensure the device is still connected to the UVM network during this process.<\/p>\n<p>Your credentials will not be saved, and will only be used to authenticate to UVM&#8217;s Jamf servers. During the installation process, MacOS will fetch and install UVM policy and software automatically. It will need to be logged into once to complete the installation of software, and may reboot a few times.<\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Non-DEP Enrolled<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--info  hts-messages--withtitle hts-messages--withicon \"   >\n    \t\t\t<span class=\"hts-messages__title\">Most 2017 or newer UVM-owned MacOS devices are DEP enrolled.<\/span>\n    \t\t<\/div>\n<p><!-- \/.ht-shortcodes-messages -->\n    \t\t<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--alert  hts-messages--withtitle hts-messages--withicon \"   >\n    \t\t\t<span class=\"hts-messages__title\">Jamf installs volume licensed software and should only be used on machines purchased with UVM funds or UVM grant dollars.<\/span>\n    \t\t<\/div>\n<p><!-- \/.ht-shortcodes-messages -->\n    \t\t<\/p>\n<p>If the machine is not enrolled in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/apple-dep\/\">Apple&#8217;s Device Enrollment Program<\/a> despite being a UVM owned computer, you&#8217;ll have to have the machine enroll in policy management after setup is complete.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/casper.uvm.edu\/enroll\/\">https:\/\/casper.uvm.edu\/enroll\/<\/a> on the device.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a prompted to sign in with your UVM netID and password &#8211; this won&#8217;t link the machine to your account, only use your account to authenticate to UVM&#8217;s Jamf policy servers.<\/li>\n<li>Click Continue to download the first profile and open the downloaded file from your downloads folder<\/li>\n<li>Go to System Preferences -&gt; Profiles and choose &#8220;Install.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Repeat this process for the second profile.<\/li>\n<li>Reboot the machine so that the policy details will be downloaded and applied to the
