UVM and other large organizations utilize a WPA2 Enterprise wireless network, granting enhanced security methods, additional controls, and a number of other options critical to UVM’s wireless infrastructure. Unfortunately, game consoles and media streaming devices are not designed to be compatible with WiFi using WPA2 Enterprise network security, as these type of devices are made for common consumer network configurations like those on your standard home wireless router.<\/span><\/p>\n

As an alternative, Ethernet equipped devices can connect to the internet using the data port located in your residential hall.\u00a0All you need to do is complete the Network Registration Form at go.uvm.edu\/playonline<\/a>. To complete the form, you will need the Wired MAC address of the your device. See below for instructions on finding your MAC address.<\/span><\/p>\n \t\t

What is a MAC Address?<\/h3><\/div>\r\n \t\t\t

A Media Access Control (MAC) address is a unique identifier for a device or network adapter on a network. It’s also known as a physical or hardware address. Unlike an IP address<\/a>, the MAC address doesn’t generally change when traveling to a new location (although there are exceptions<\/a>). Computers with multiple connections have a unique MAC address for each of their Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth adapters.<\/p>\n

MAC addresses are 12-character alphanumeric values broken into six groups of two\u00a0hexadecimal<\/a> digits. Those groups can be stylistically separated by hyphens, colons, or spaces, or not separated at all. The first three groups together make up the device’s organizationally unique identifier<\/a> (OUI) which can be used to identify the manufacturer.<\/p>\n

Registering an Ethernet Adapter<\/h3><\/div>\r\n \t\t\t

Some devices that do not have an ethernet port can still be connected to the wired network via an ethernet adapter.\u00a0 When doing this, you’ll need to register the adapter’s MAC address, rather than that of the device that is connecting through it.<\/p>\n

Some ethernet adapters will have the MAC address printed on the side of the item itself.\u00a0 If this is not the case, you can register the adapter manually like this:<\/p>\n

  1. Using a laptop or desktop computer, connect the computer to the wired network using an ethernet cable and the adapter.<\/li>\n
  2. On the computer, visit https:\/\/netreg.uvm.edu and register the device.<\/li>\n
  3. Your adapter will now be registered, and should be usable with your media device.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If you don’t have a computer that you can do this with, you can also bring the adapter to the Computer Clinic<\/a> so we can help register it.<\/p>\n

      Finding your MAC Address in Network Settings<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      The\u00a0Network\u00a0<\/b>screen is the place you come to for everything that involves your console\u2019s ability to connect to Xbox Live, play multiplayer games, and troubleshoot general network performance issues. To get to the\u00a0Network\u00a0<\/b>screen:<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Press the\u00a0Xbox<\/b>\u00a0button\u00a0on your gamepad to open the guide.<\/span><\/li>\n
      2. Select\u00a0Settings<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
      3. Select\u00a0All Settings<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
      4. Select\u00a0Network<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
      5. Select\u00a0Network settings<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        The\u00a0Network\u00a0<\/b>screen is divided into three columns. This page describes network settings options that are available from each of these columns.<\/span>
        \nNow that you’ve located your Wired MAC address, please include it in your Network Registration Form at\u00a0        go.uvm.edu\/playonline<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

        New Xbox One – Finding your MAC Address<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        If your Xbox One is fresh out of the box and has never connected to the internet before, it will try to run a system update as soon as it is turned on. This process requires an internet connection and cannot be skipped. You are unable to view your MAC address during this process, so cannot register your Xbox One for an internet connection.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Heres the workaround:<\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Proceed through System Startup. It will fail because you do not have an internet connection.<\/span><\/li>\n
        2. Select the “Fix It” option to attempt to diagnose the connection issue.<\/span><\/li>\n
        3. You will be brought to a screen prompting you to manually set up the connection. This screen lists both your wireless and wired MAC address<\/span><\/li>\n
        4. Record the\u00a0Wired\u00a0<\/strong>MAC address and\u00a0include it in your Network Registration Form at go.uvm.edu\/playonline<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            3. Select the\u00a0System<\/strong> icon under the\u00a0Settings<\/strong> menu.<\/span><\/li>\n

                  1. Ensure that you have a compatible Roku player with an Ethernet port. The Roku 3 is the most recent Roku that offers this feature.<\/span><\/li>\n
                  2. Locate your Roku’s wired MAC address. This can be found on either the side or bottom of your player, or on the box you received it in. If you are unable to locate the MAC address that way, open the home screen on your Roku from your TV and then go to\u00a0Settings<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Network<\/strong>. The MAC address needed to register your Roku will be listed as either\u00a0Ethernet Address<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0Wired MAC Address<\/strong>.\u00a0The MAC address may have letters and\/or numbers and will be in the format\u00a000:00:00:00:00:00.<\/span>

                    1. Open the Windows Settings<\/strong> app (<\/i><\/strong>). One way to do this is to hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and tap I (<\/i><\/strong>+I<\/strong>).<\/li>\n
                    2. Navigate to the Network & Internet > Ethernet<\/strong> settings <\/strong>section.\u00a0 One way to do this is to use the Find a setting<\/strong> search box to search for “ethernet”.

                      1. Click the network icon in the bottom-right corner of your screen. If your computer is connected to a wired Ethernet connection, that icon will most likely look like one of the circled icons, but the others are possibilities also. You may have to first click the chevron (<\/i><\/strong>) to show hidden icons.
