Once you set it up, Brightspace does all the calculations for you. With the right settings, students can see their overall grade as they work through the semester.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Points:<\/strong> This option aggregates students&#8217; grades as they are entered. With the right settings, students can see their overall percentage grade total as they work through the semester.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Formula:<\/strong> This method is the most complicated and not commonly chosen. It means that students will have <em>no grade<\/em> before the assessment is due, but <em>after the due date, if they haven&#8217;t submitted it, they&#8217;ll receive a zero<\/em>. You can modify their grades individually, as you see fit, for late submissions.  <strong>Important:<\/strong> If you <strong>do not choose Automatic Zero<\/strong>, then you will need to manually enter zeros for work that wasn&#8217;t submitted. <em><strong>Only when zeros are entered (for un-submitted work), will students see an accurate Final Calculated Grade.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Check &#8220;Auto Update<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t<br \/>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Wizard Steps 4 and 5: Schemes and Managing View<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<p>\n4. Student View Display Options:<br \/>\nClick &#8220;Display final grade calculation to students.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>7: Grades Setup Summary<br \/>\nReview your settings and click &#8220;Finish.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t<\/p>\n<p><!--*****88888*******______*********88888*******--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size:26px;\">Manage Grades<\/h2>\n<p>Click on the <strong>Manage Grades<\/strong> tab to create, organize, and edit grade items and categories, reorder your Grade Book, and more. <a href=\"https:\/\/community.d2l.com\/brightspace\/kb\/articles\/3553-manage-grades-in-the-grades-tool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Also refer to D2L Brightspace Community Documentation<\/a><\/p>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3><strong>Create grade categories and items<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<p>\n<strong>Categories<\/strong><br \/>\nIn a <strong>weighted grading system<\/strong>, you can assign percentages as defined in your syllabus to either categories of assessments or individual columns. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Homework <strong>20% <\/strong> (category)<\/li>\n<li>Weekly quizzes  <strong>25%<\/strong>  (category)<\/li>\n<li>Mid-term exam  <strong>25%<\/strong> (single column\/item)<\/li>\n<li>Final exam  <strong>30%<\/strong> (single column\/item<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a <strong>points grading system<\/strong>, categories are helpful for organization.<\/p>\n<p>In both systems, you can use categories to <strong>drop the lowest scores<\/strong> in a grouping of assessments, if you choose to distribute points evenly. <\/p>\n<p><strong>To create a category:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click on the Manage Grades tab<\/li>\n<li>Click the &#8220;New&#8221; button and select &#8220;Category&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Name the category and decide whether and how to distribute points.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>For the Points system<\/strong>: If each column has a different point value, you may wish to leave &#8220;Distribution&#8221; unchecked. <em>If you do check it to distribute points, you can enter a value, but be aware that it will override all your columns&#8217; assigned points.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>For the Weighted system<\/strong>: it&#8217;s best to choose either distribute evenly or by points. <em>It&#8217;s not advisable to manually assign<\/em> weights to a category with many items. (This is because every column weight would need to be updated each time a new column is created in the category in order not to exceed 100% for that category). You have to delete the quiz or assignment in their respective tool pages first. Students are <em>not penalized<\/em> for <em>not completing<\/em> a bonus assessment, but their course grade may be improved if they do. Create a New Bonus Grade Item<\/strong> <\/div>\n<p>First, create your assignment or quiz in the normal way and be sure to connect it to the Grade Book. (You might name your assignment &#8220;Bonus assignment &#8211; not required but may boost your grade.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Next, <strong>modify it in the Grades area to designate it as Bonus:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:upper-alpha;\">\n<li>Go to <strong>Grades > Manage Grades<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Locate and edit that grade item<\/li>\n<li>Check the <strong>Bonus<\/strong> box (see image)<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Save and Close<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This item is now <em>optional<\/em>, and if students don&#8217;t receive a grade for it, it will not hurt their overall grade. <\/p>\n<div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--alert  hts-messages--withtitle hts-messages--withicon \"   >\n    \t\t\t<span class=\"hts-messages__title\">Note:<\/span>    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t\tBonus items are not included in the maximum points for a category or final grade. They are added <em>on top of the calculated grade<\/em>. You may wish to assign a score comparable to the other assessments in the category.<\/p>\n<p>Bonus items cannot make users&#8217; grades exceed the maximum possible points <strong>unless both the category and Final Grades columns are also edited so that &#8220;Can exceed is checked.&#8221;<\/strong>    \t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \/.ht-shortcodes-messages --><\/p>\n<div id=\"extraptsassignment\" style=\"font-size:120%;\"><strong>2. Give <em>Extra Points<\/em> on a Required Assignment <\/strong><\/div>\n<p>This means that the assignment is <em>required<\/em>, and students are given the option to do extra work. If they don&#8217;t do it, it won&#8217;t hurt their grade, but it may improve their grade if they do. <\/p>\n<p>To set this up:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:upper-alpha;\">\n<li>In Grades > Manage Grades, edit the item and check <strong>Can exceed<\/strong>. For example if the assignment is worth 20 points, but students have the option to earn an extra 5 points on it, you would NOT check Bonus, but instead check the box <strong>Can Exceed <\/strong>. In this example, you&#8217;d leave the possible points as 20 &#8211; in this way if someone earns the full 20pts  without doing the extra credit, they&#8217;ll still get 100%. But it allows you to enter a grade above the maximum points value if they&#8217;ve done that extra work.\n<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, if the assignment is part of a category in the Grade Book, you&#8217;ll need to edit BOTH the category and the Final Grade item by choosing &#8220;Can exceed.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div id=\"extracrquestion\" style=\"font-size:120%;\"><strong>3. Add an Extra Credit Question to a Quiz<\/strong>  <\/div>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:upper-alpha;\">\n<li>Add the question to the quiz, normally<\/li>\n<li>Check the box next to the question <\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;More Actions&#8221; and choose &#8220;Toggle Bonus.&#8221; You&#8217;ll now see the total possible points for the whole quiz does not include that question. That means\n<ul>\n<li>There&#8217;s no penalty for not answering it.<\/li>\n<li>If they answer it incorrectly, it will not hurt their overall grade.<\/li>\n<li>If they answer it correctly it will boost their grade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Save quiz and go to Grades > Manage Grades<\/li>\n<li>Edit this quiz item and choose &#8220;Can Exceed.&#8221; So, even if the student got 100% on all required questions they could still exceed that grade if they answered the bonus question. <\/li>\n<li>If your quizzes are in a category, you need to also set both that category AND the Final Calculated Grade to &#8220;Can Exceed&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JH9fA1fFRtA&amp;t=7s\">This video by Lakeland College <\/a>describes these differences steps clearly.<\/p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t<br \/>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3><strong>Display cumulative course grades to students<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>To let students track their course grades throughout the semester, a few things must be set in place.  <\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If you&#8217;re using a Weighted system, before anything else, the Grade Book <em>items (columns) and categories<\/em> must be accurately set up (See Setup Wizard section above).<\/li>\n<li>For either the Weighted or Points-based system, the <em>Final Calculated Grade<\/em> column must be set to <strong>&#8220;release grades&#8221;<\/strong> to all students.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Adjustments can be made to their final grade at the end of the semester. (See Switching from \u201cFinal Calculated\u201d to \u201cFinal Adjusted\u201d at the end of the semester in the next block below.)<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Final Calculated Grade<\/strong> column automatically exists in every course, and it displays the students&#8217; cumulative scores to YOU. However, you can also allow each student to see their own cumulative grade. This can be beneficial to students and motivating for them to see their progress. <\/p>\n<div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--alert  hts-messages--withtitle hts-messages--withicon \"   >\n    \t\t\t<span class=\"hts-messages__title\">Important<\/span>    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t\t<strong>Final Grades still need to be entered into Banner at the end of the semester.<\/strong>    \t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \/.ht-shortcodes-messages --><\/p>\n<p>To allow students to see their final grade as it changes through the semester, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:18px;\"><strong>Step 1: Choose the correct display settings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is also described above in choosing the settings. to &ldquo;Final Adjusted&rdquo; at the end of the semester<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<p>\n<strong>Why might you want to do this?<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you want to manually adjust some, or all, of your students&#8217; final grades at the end of the semester, utilize the Final Adjusted Grade column. Note that the <em>only<\/em> time to make this switch is at the <em><strong>end of the semester<\/strong><\/em> when all of your grading is completed. That&#8217;s because, while the default Final Calculated Grade column continues to recalculate and display changing grades as student work is scored, the <em>Final Adjusted Grade<\/em> column is static, and the total isn&#8217;t recalculated even when new grade data is posted.<\/p>\n<p>When you&#8217;ve completed grading, you will transfer all grade data from the <em>Final Calculated Grade<\/em> over to the <em>Final Adjusted Grade<\/em> column, then you can edit all or some students&#8217; grade totals as you wish. (Even if you&#8217;re only editing a few grades, you&#8217;ll need to move all grade data to this column.) Here&#8217;s how:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the top of the Final Adjusted Grade column, click the down arrow and choose &#8220;Enter Grades.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Next to the title at the top of the page, click the down arrow and select &#8220;Transfer All.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>NOTE: If more data is added to the Grade Book after you&#8217;ve done this, there will be a discrepancy between the <em>Final Calculated Grade<\/em> and the <em>Final Adjusted Grade<\/em>. In this case follow steps 1 and 2 but instead of &#8220;Transfer&#8221; choose &#8220;Recalculate all.&#8221; However, your modifications will be overwritten, so this is why we wait until the end of the semester to switch to the Final Adjusted Grade view.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3><strong>Set up alternate grading scheme<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Schemes are used in grades to build custom views and grade experiences. They translate grade item points into symbols (such as letter grades) in the <strong>Grades<\/strong> display. <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>You can build a letter grade scheme if you want to grade students on A-F scale. You are able to apply the scheme to an item or the whole gradebook. (all are selected by default)<\/li>\n<li>Select the <strong>Key Field <\/strong>you want to use to identify users. (<strong>Org Defined ID<\/strong> is selected by default)<\/li>\n<li>Select the<strong> Grade Values <\/strong>to export. (<strong>Points <\/strong>are selected by default)<\/li>\n<li>Select the <strong>User Details<\/strong> you want to export. (nothing is selected by default) Select fields for easy identification.<\/li>\n<li>Select the checkbox next to any grade item or grade category you want to export.
