You can change your lived name back to your legal name at any time. UVM community members can find information about legal name and gender changes on identity documents in Vermont here: https:\/\/www.outrightvt.org\/changing-identity-documents\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t<\/p>\r\n \t\t\t \t\t\t\r\n \t\t<\/div>\r\n \t\t\n \t\t \r\n \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n When changing your name, it is important to consider situations in which you will be using your lived name, and decide whether or not you will need your name to be consistent on all records and forms of ID.<\/p>\n Your legal name will appear on official transcripts, financial aid documents, visa documents, W-2 forms, and Payroll documents. Additionally, for students, some mailings and bills that go to parents or guardians will reflect your legal name.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t<\/p>\r\n \t\t\t \t\t\t\r\n \t\t<\/div>\r\n \t\t\n Lived names (preferred names, names in use) are names that an individual wants to be known by in the University community. Designating a lived name is not the same as a legal name change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Lived names are chosen for a variety of reasons, including:<\/p>\n \n \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n \t\t\t<\/div>\r\n \t\t<\/div>\r\n \t\t\n \t\t Pronouns are a way of indicating the set of pronouns by which you should be identified. An example of pronouns is she\/hers<\/em> or they\/them<\/em>.<\/p>\n More information about pronouns may be found at mypronouns.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n \n \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n \t\t\t<\/div>\r\n \t\t<\/div>\r\n \t\t\n \t\t No, using a lived name or displaying pronouns is entirely optional. However, we strongly encourage their use.<\/p>\n Your lived name shows as the default in Banner, Brightspace, MS Teams, in the campus directory, in your UVM email, and on your CATcard. For many people, it makes sense to have the name they go by be reflected across campus systems.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Students’ pronouns, if selected, display on class rosters in Brightspace, as well as in the student profile in Navigate. Student, faculty, and staff pronouns are visible in UVM\u2019s online directory<\/a>.\u00a0 Pronouns may also be made visible in Office 365 by selecting the box:<\/p>\n If your legal name and your lived name are the same, you do not need to do anything; your legal name will be used unless you submit a lived name.<\/p>\n \n \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n \t\t\t<\/div>\r\n \t\t<\/div>\r\n \t\t\n \t\t Your lived name will be used to identify you in most day-to-day University business and on some documents, so think carefully before indicating a lived name that you are not comfortable with being used in public settings within the University.<\/p>\n The University reserves the right to remove or deny a lived name submission if used inappropriately. This includes, but is not limited to, foul or inappropriate language or identifiers submitted to avoid a legal obligation or to create misrepresentation.<\/p>\n \n \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n \t\t\t<\/div>\r\n \t\t<\/div>\r\n \t\t\n \t\t Lived name and pronouns are being implemented across campus, but some systems are still being modified to display them instead of legal name.<\/p>\n The following systems have been updated to display <\/span>lived name for students<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n If you would like to make your legal name searchable in UVM’s directory, even if you live by another name, you can check the box under “Legal Name”, then click “Save”.<\/p>\n Generally, documents that the University provides to the federal government or in conjunction with a person\u2019s Social Security Number require the use of a legal name.<\/p>\n Your legal name will continue to be used on official university documents, on authorized external communications not directed solely to you, and in systems that must use legal name due to legal or regulatory requirements.<\/p>\n For example, your legal name will continue to be used on:<\/p>\n \n \t\t\t\t\tLimited staff with an administrative need (e.g., Public Safety, Registrar\u2019s Office, and Student Financial Services) will see both legal and lived names and pronouns. Similar to GPAs and other sensitive information, these staff are trained on the implications of this access. UVM systems regularly run sync processes which are necessary for the propagation of lived name or pronoun updates.<\/p>\n The exception is Microsoft Teams and some other Microsoft products. Currently, Microsoft Teams caches some information to assist with performance. This information includes user data, meaning it does not populate lived names and pronouns across all Teams applications every day. A lived name change may not be visible to you or<\/em> to other members of the UVM community in a timely manner. We are working with Microsoft to ensure Teams and these other Microsoft products are in line with UVM standards.<\/p>\n \n \t\t\t\t\tFor incoming first-year students, all directory information except for NetID will be hidden until classes start.
