{"id":20882,"date":"2021-07-09T11:36:20","date_gmt":"2021-07-09T15:36:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/dev\/kb\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=20882"},"modified":"2023-01-25T14:31:43","modified_gmt":"2023-01-25T19:31:43","slug":"windows-local-administrator-account","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/dev\/kb\/article\/windows-local-administrator-account\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows &#8211; Local Administrator Account"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UVM-owned Windows computers will each have a <strong>Local Administrator account<\/strong>.\u00a0 By using this account&#8217;s credentials, you can do things like manually install programs and change system settings.<\/p>\n<p>There is no way to easily recover passwords for these accounts if lost or forgotten.\u00a0 If you are locked out of your local admin account or don&#8217;t know the password, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/contact\/\">please contact the Tech Team<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>    \t\t<div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--danger  hts-messages--withtitle hts-messages--withicon \"   >\r\n    \t\t\t<span class=\"hts-messages__title\">Proceed with Caution!<\/span>    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\t<p>\r\n    \t\t\t\t\tTo maintain the security of UVM&#8217;s computing systems, please use these credentials with care.<\/p>\n<p>Please DO NOT:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Authenticate an unexpected prompt.<\/li>\n<li>Install programs from non-trusted sources.<\/li>\n<li>Share this account&#8217;s password, except with other users of the same machine.    \t\t\t\t<\/p>\r\n    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\r\n    \t\t<\/div><!-- \/.ht-shortcodes-messages -->\r\n    \t\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Use Local Administrator Credentials<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Some actions performed on your computer will prompt you to enter administrator credentials.\u00a0 When this happens, a window will appear that looks like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/ladmin_01.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox-0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20886\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/ladmin_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"596\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/dev\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/ladmin_01.jpg 570w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/dev\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/ladmin_01-287x300.jpg 287w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/dev\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/ladmin_01-48x50.jpg 48w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/dev\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/ladmin_01-57x60.jpg 57w, https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/dev\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/ladmin_01-96x100.jpg 96w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To proceed, enter &#8220;.\\Administrator&#8221; in the first box, your local admin password in the second box, and click <strong>Yes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Sign into Windows as a Local Administrator<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><strong>From the Sign-In Screen<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In the bottom-left corner of the sign-in screen, click on <strong>Other User<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Enter &#8220;.\\Administrator&#8221; as the username, enter your local admin password, and press <strong>Enter<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You will now be signed into your computer as the local administrator.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Another Account<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the start menu by either pressing the <strong>Windows<\/strong> key or by clicking on the icon in the bottom-left corner of your screen.<\/li>\n<li>Above the search bar at the top of the menu, click on your Profile Picture or Username.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Switch User<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>This will lock your computer and return you to the sign-in screen.\u00a0 Follow the above instructions to sign into your local admin account.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--alert  hts-messages--withtitle hts-messages--withicon \"   >\r\n    \t\t\t<span class=\"hts-messages__title\">Admin Rights for User Accounts<\/span>    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\t<p>\r\n    \t\t\t\t\tPer UVM policy, normal user accounts should not be granted administrator rights.
