These instructions assume you&#8217;re using <a href=\"http:\/\/outlook.cloud.microsoft\">Outlook Online<\/a>, though many of these recommendations are also applicable when using mail applications such as Outlook, Apple Mail, and Windows Mail.<\/p>\n<h2>Finding a Lost Message<\/h2>\n<p>If you are missing a message from your inbox or another folder, these are a few common places to check.<\/p>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Search for the Message in Outlook Online<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The simplest way to find a lost message is to search for it. In <a href=\"http:\/\/outlook.cloud.microsoft\">Outlook Online<\/a>, you can start a search by clicking in the box in the top left corner of the page.<\/p>\n<p>A basic search for the name of the message sender, topic of the message, or other information specific to that message should be sufficient in most cases. However, it may be useful to refine your search using this <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/search-mail-and-people-in-outlook-com-88108edf-028e-4306-b87e-7400bbb40aa7\">Advanced Query Search<\/a> article from Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--alert  hts-messages--withtitle hts-messages--withicon \"   >\n    \t\t\t<span class=\"hts-messages__title\">Check the search context<\/span>    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t\tThe default search context can vary, so make sure &#8220;All Folders&#8221; is chosen when searching in your primary mailbox. For secondary mailboxes, you may need to search each folder individually.    \t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \/.ht-shortcodes-messages -->\n    \t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Junk Email Folder<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of reasons an email may incorrectly appear in your Junk Email folder:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You accidentally moved the file to the Junk Email folder.<\/li>\n<li>The sender is on your list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/lost-email#blockedsenders\">Blocked Senders<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>You have a rule configured to move messages like this one to the Junk folder through an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/filtering-emails-in-outlook\/\">Email Filter<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The message was incorrectly marked as spam by our spam filter. The subject of these messages will start with [SPAM &#8211; Definite] or [SPAM?: ****].\n<ul>\n<li>Please see the section in this article for reporting a false positive: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/proofpoint\">https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/proofpoint<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Deleted Items or Trash Folder<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>If a message appears in your <strong>Deleted Items <\/strong>or <strong>Trash<\/strong> folder, this may have occurred because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You accidentally moved this message to the <strong>Deleted Items<\/strong> or <strong>Trash <\/strong>folder.<\/li>\n<li>You have a rule configured to move messages like this one to the <strong>Delete Items<\/strong> or <strong>Trash<\/strong> folder through an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/filtering-emails-in-outlook\/\">Email Filter<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Recover Deleted Items<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Messages that have been emptied from the <strong>Trash<\/strong> or <strong>Deleted Items<\/strong> folder are recoverable for up to 90 days through the <strong>Recover Deleted Items<\/strong> feature. Messages will only appear in <strong>Recover Deleted Items<\/strong> if they have been accidentally deleted from your <strong>Trash<\/strong> or <strong>Deleted Items<\/strong> folders, or if they have been in your <strong>Deleted Items<\/strong> folder for more than 90 days.<\/p>\n<p>You can view recoverable deleted items in Outlook Online by clicking <strong>Recover deleted items from this folder<\/strong> while you&#8217;re viewing your <strong>Deleted Items<\/strong> folder. Follow the instructions in this article to recover deleted mail: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/recover-deleted-email\">https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/recover-deleted-email<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n<h2>Finding a Lost Folder<\/h2>\n<p>If you are missing an entire folder, these are some common places to search for it.<\/p>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Deleted Items or Trash<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s possible your folder was accidentally moved to your Trash or Deleted Items folder.<\/p>\n<p>Click the chevron icon (<i class=\"fa fa-chevron-right \" ><\/i>) next to your Trash or Deleted Items folder to expand it and search for your lost folder.<\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Expand and Search your Folders<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s possible your folder was accidentally moved into another folder.<\/p>\n<p>Click the chevron icon (<i class=\"fa fa-chevron-right \" ><\/i>) next to each folder to expand them, then search for your folder.<\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Other Accounts<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>If you have other mail accounts added to your computer, it&#8217;s possible the lost folder was accidentally moved to another account.<\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n<h2>Reviewing Blocked Senders and Email Filters<\/h2>\n<p>For more generic information and instructions on setting up Blocked Senders, Marking Senders as Safe, or creating Email Filters, please see this article: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/filtering-emails-in-outlook\">https:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/it\/kb\/article\/filtering-emails-in-outlook<\/a><\/p>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  id=\"blockedsenders\"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Blocked Senders<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>If you block a sender, email from this sender will be automatically routed to your Junk Email folder.<\/p>\n<p>If messages unexpectedly appear in your Junk Email folder, and are not marked with [Spam &#8211; Definite] or [Spam?:*****], it&#8217;s possible you have the sender accidentally blocked.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/outlook.office.com\/mail\/options\/mail\/junkEmail\/blockedSendersAndDomainsV2\">Click here to review your list of blocked senders<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  id=\"emailfilters\"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\"><h3>Email Filters\/Inbox rules<\/h3><\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Email filters\/Inbox rules automatically process incoming mail. You can set up filters to automatically delete, redirect, mark mail as read, among a number of other options. <a href=\"https:\/\/outlook.office.com\/mail\/options\/mail\/rules\/inboxRules\">Click here to view your email filters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to configure your email filters to be appropriately specific to ensure you aren&#8217;t filtering messages in unintended or unexpected ways. For example, perhaps you create the following rule to automatically delete any &#8220;$400 dollars weekly&#8221; job offer emails.<\/p>\n<p>This rule would delete any &#8220;$400 dollars weekly&#8221; job offer emails as desired. However, it would also unintentionally delete an email with the subject &#8220;Weekly Meeting&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Rules like the one above should be reconfigured to more effectively target messages.
