Content Management (SharePoint)

We will be switching new SharePoint site creation over from SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint 2016 very soon!  Existing, actively used SharePoint 2010 sites will be migrated to SharePoint 2016 in consultation with site owners. Inactive sites will be migrated, archived, or deleted, also in consultation with site owners.

SharePoint provides a web-based, extensible, and customizable team collaboration and document management platform for all UVM community members as well as external partners.

SharePoint sites consist of web pages, lists, and libraries.

A SharePoint list can be thought of as a spreadsheet with each row containing one list item and each column representing a piece of information (metadata) about the list item. Lists can contain anything from tasks or events to inventory information, customer interaction reports, and more.

A SharePoint library is a special kind of list that contains files like MS Office documents, photos, videos, PDFs, etc., and information about that file. SharePoint allows teams to collaborate on document creation and editing including the ability for multiple users to edit the same MS Office document at the same time either in a web browser or in MS Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. All changes to files stored in SharePoint libraries are saved as previous versions and can be reviewed or restored.
