Compensation FAQ

How are salaries determined?

Salaries are determined on an individual basis by the management team responsible for the position in collaboration with classification & compensation staff, taking level of responsibility, individual's education and experience, market data and internal equity into account.  Salaries cannot be below the minimum of the pay band.

What is the pay band for my position?

Pay bands associated with your classification title can be found in the corrective job family on the classification and compensation webpage. UVM has broad pay bands that are reviewed annually and adjusted as needed to reflect market.

Does UVM have annual increases for classified staff?

Salary increases for classified staff are granted at the beginning of each staff member's appointment year (e.g., on July 1 for a 12-month appointment year, on September 1 for a 9-month appointment year).

What other opportunities exist for a salary increase?

In addition to annual salary increases, non-represented staff may also be eligible to receive an Off-Cycle Increase, which is intended to address market and equity issues relative to recruitment, retention, and organizational change during the fiscal year. Such increases are contingent on availability of sufficient funds in department budgets. Represented staff are not eligible for Off-Cycle increases.

How are salaries set when classified staff change positions or titles as the result of a position review?

The appropriate salary is determined on an individual basis by the management team responsible for the position, working together with Human Resource Services. Typically, upon movement of a position to a higher payband, an employee is eligible to receive a position review increase. Generally, the minimum increase will be no less than 5%. The new salary cannot be below the minimum of the new payband. Salary increases are retroactive to the date that HR received the action in PeopleAdmin.

Classification FAQ

Why classify positions?

Like most large organizations, UVM classifies its staff positions to help supervisors communicate with applicants and employees about jobs, to help determine salaries, and to ensure compliance with laws such as the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Equal Pay Act, the Civil Rights Act, and the Americans With Disabilities Act.

What happens if my job changes?

Job duties may change with or without changing the level, title or salary associated with your position. If your duties have changed but remain at the same level of responsibility, typically your title and salary will not change either.

If your job duties have changed significantly and are at a higher level of responsibility, you may be eligible for an Off-Cycle Increase while remaining in your current title. If ongoing and substantial changes have occurred in the nature, variety, and complexity of your work, your position may need to be reviewed to determine if another title is more appropriate.

What  if a supervisor assigns duties that do not seem to be included in my position description?

Classified positions typically have a small percentage of duties that can be described as "other duties as assigned." If those duties exceed 5%, the supervisor should edit the position description and submit it to the unit's HR representative.

How is a review/update of my position initiated?

Since your duties are assigned by your supervisor, a position update or review is submitted by your supervisor in PeopleAdmin. If you believe that your position needs to be updated or reviewed, contact your supervisor, your departmental administrator or your Human Resources Representative.

What if my supervisor has not shown support for an update or review of my position?

Contact the Human Resource Representative for your college/unit for assistance.

Where can I find a written description of my job?

The primary source of information about your job is your formal Position Description (PD). The Job Posting that was available during the recruitment process is a condensed version of your PD and may contain additional information. Also, a generic description/Job Standard for your position is available within the approriate job family and series on the previous page.

Your ‘UVM Classification Title’ appears on the generic Job Standard and your PD. You may also have an individual ‘Departmental Business Title’ which may appear on the web directory.

Contact the Human Resource Representative for your college/unit to obtain a copy of your current Position Description.
