229 Pearl Street

(If 229 Pearl Street were a survivor from pre-1830 Burlington one would expect to see a footprint between the two blue ones pictured here...did Ammi Young include out-buildings in his survey?)

The Seymour Outbuilding

This two-by-three bay wooden frame structure is another bit of a mystery. At first glance the structure seems to be from the late 1800s because of some dominant Queen Ann attributes, however, upon closer examination there are some clear remnants of the Federal style.

It is believed that this building was once an outbuilding for William Seymour who built the massive Federal mansion at 220(12). The close proximity of the two structures seems to support this. Little is known of the house's history, but more than likely the building was remodeled in the late 1800s, thus nearly erasing its Federal past. Another possibility is that this building may have been moved from somewhere else in the city to its present location. Upon closer inspection the rear two-thirds of the building are supported by a very old random stone foundation. Now whether this foundation dates to pre-1830 or whether it's part of the original design of the structure is a mystery.
