Jones Brothers Granite Shed

Statement of Significance

page 8

Presently, plans are underway to restore the former Jones Brothers Granite Shed. The site was divided in 1996 into three parcels, one containing 2.8 acres with the granite shed and an outbuilding, one lot of 1.6 acres and the final lot of 1.18 acres with the former office building. The first two lots were purchased on October 16, 1997, by the Barre Granite Center and Heritage Museum, which plans to convert the former granite shed into a granite museum and incorporate the surrounding grounds as an interpretive site.

In the video "A Community Vision" produced by the Barre Granite Center and Heritage Museum, both Vermont's Governor Howard Dean and Senator Patrick Leahy are included as proponents of a museum dedicated to the history of the granite industry as "closely ties to the history of Vermont" (Governor Dean).
