Catamounts Care. You Can Make a Difference.

Have you ever felt uneasy about a situation and wanted to help but didn’t? If so, then you’re not alone. This is known as the bystander effect—when an individual does not offer help to a victim in the presence of others. Step Up! is a prosocial behavior and bystander intervention program that aims to combat this effect by increasing an individual’s motivation to help others and educating students about appropriate ways to intervene in problematic situations.

The goals of Step UP! Think.Care. Act

  • Raise awareness of helping behaviors
  • Increase motivation to help
  • Develop skills and confidence when responding to problems or concerns
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of self and others

Overview of Bystander Intervention Skills

Step Up! presents five steps to safely intervene

1. Notice the event
2. Interpret the event as a problem
3. Assume personal responsibility
4. Know how to help
