Abstract

Survey insects to establish site specific data on species abundance and diversity, and to establish permanent monitoring sites for long term trend information. Document insect biodiversity with respect to elevation and habitat. Document taxonomic diversity and abundance of selected insect groups, especially Lepidoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, and Coleoptera.

      • Method Description: Samples are sorted, identified and stored at the Entomology Research Laboratory.

  • Past Methods (no longer in use)
    • Light trap
      • Started: 1991-05-01
        Ended: 1995-11-01
      • Method Description: A single light trap is placed in or near the center of four circular (20 m diameter) plots at each elevation.

    • Light trap operation
      • Started: 1991-05-01
        Ended: 1995-11-01
      • Method Description: Light traps are operated once a week from April/May to October.

      • Started: 1991-05-01
        Ended: 1995-11-01
      • Method Description: Three elevations are sampled: 400 m (Proctor Maple Research Center), 640 m (Underhill State Park) and 1160 m (summit).

    • Current elevation use
      • Started: 1994-11-01
        Ended: 1995-11-01
      • Method Description: The 1160 m elevation is discontinued, a 715 m site is added, and the 400 and 640 m sites are continued.

Sampling Equipment

  • UV black light, collection bins
    • Started: 1991-05-01
      Ended: 1995-11-01
    • Sampling Description: UV black-light supported over plastic collectin bin and powered by car battery.

Site Characteristics

  • Site Description: Browns River watershed at 400 m (Proctor Maple Research Center) in a sugar maple forest, 640 m (Underhill State Park) in a mixed hardwood forest, 1160 m (UVM Natural Area) in a sub-alpine balsam fir forest, and 715 m (Underhill State Park) in a mixed hardwood/softwood forest.
