This novel experimental tool will allow scientists to study controlled icing events of different intensity and frequency in different forest types. Researchers also held a workshop with ecosystem scientists, climatologists, physical scientists, computer modelers, social scientists, and industry experts to define the state-of- knowledge on ice storms and examine the nature and extent of these storms in the Northeast. In addition, they developed machine-learning algorithms which allow computer models to identify unique ice storm climatology in past weather systems to better predict ice storms in the future.</para>
<studyAreaDescription/></project><dataTable><entityName>Canopy Openness </entityName><entityDescription>Canopy openness was estimated with digital hemispherical photography in both treatment and control plots. </entityDescription><physical><objectName>VMC.1108.2503</objectName><dataFormat><externallyDefinedFormat><formatName>mySQL</formatName></externallyDefinedFormat></dataFormat><distribution><online><url>https://www.uvm.edu/femc/CI4/data/archive/project/experimental-ice-glazing/dataset/canopy-openness</url></online></distribution></physical><coverage scope="document"><temporalCoverage scope="document"><rangeOfDates><beginDate><calendarDate>2010-12-01</calendarDate></beginDate><endDate><calendarDate>2011-04-01</calendarDate></endDate></rangeOfDates></temporalCoverage></coverage><attributeList><attribute><attributeName>canopy_status</attributeName><attributeLabel>canopy_status</attributeLabel><attributeDefinition>Leaf presence </attributeDefinition><storageType>text</storageType><measurementScale><nominal><nonNumericDomain/></nominal></measurementScale></attribute><attribute><attributeName>Openness_</attributeName><attributeLabel>Openness_</attributeLabel><attributeDefinition>Percent of canopy open</attributeDefinition><storageType>decimal</storageType><measurementScale><ratio><unit><standardUnit>meter</standardUnit></unit><numericDomain><numberType>real</numberType><BoundsGroup><bounds><minimum>0</minimum><maximum>100</maximum></bounds></BoundsGroup></numericDomain></ratio></measurementScale></attribute><attribute><attributeName>Plot</attributeName><attributeLabel>Plot</attributeLabel><attributeDefinition>Plot Number</attributeDefinition><storageType>int</storageType><measurementScale><nominal><nonNumericDomain/></nominal></measurementScale></attribute><attribute><attributeName>timing</attributeName><attributeLabel>timing</attributeLabel><attributeDefinition>Time of observation</attributeDefinition><storageType>text</storageType><measurementScale><nominal><nonNumericDomain/></nominal></measurementScale></attribute></attributeList></dataTable></dataset></eml:eml>
