"Defining the Jewish State: Lessons from 1948," Neil Rogachevsky

Apr 10, 2024
1:30 pm to 3:30 pm
Patrick Leahy Building 102

In 1948, David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the Israeli declaration of independence at the termination of the British Mandate over Palestine. The drafting of this declaration involved dilemmas of politics, diplomacy, and values faced by Israel's leaders as they charted the path to independence and composed what became modern Israel's most important political text. The stakes began with war, state-building, strategy, and great power politics, and ascended to questions of high principle: freedom, liberty, sovereignty, rights, and religion. Neil Rogachevsky will speak on his recent book about this process, and what it says about current events. The talk will be followed by a discussion with Political Science Prof. Peter Henne, and a question and answer period with the audience.
