Gabriela Montero Westward
Pianist and composer Gabriela Montero's visionary interpretations and unique improvisational gifts have won her a devoted international following. With Westward, Montero examines the immigrant experience, beginning with two works of Prokofiev, who left Russia after the revolution but returned almost 20 years later, and proceeded by works by Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky, composers who settled permanently in the United States, contributing immensely to America?s cultural fabric. The program's centerpiece is Montero's improvised accompaniment to Charlie Chaplin's essential masterpiece The Immigrant, the tale of Chaplin's Tramp coming to America.
Presented in association with the Office of the Vice President for Human Resources, Diversity, and Multicultural Affairs through the UVM President's Initiative for Diversity.
