Exhibiting the Sacred: An Ethnography of "Spirited Things"
How are sacred objects transformed when they enter the museum? What impact does the display of religious objects have on viewers, and how do they make sense of such objects? I explore these questions (and more) through an ethnographic consideration of the "Spirited Things: Sacred Arts of the Black Atlantic" exhibition which was installed in the main gallery of UVM's Fleming Museum in the fall of 2017. I will discuss the varying ways in which the objects on display were animated not only by religious practitioners, but also by collectors, curators, museum visitors, and students as they encountered them in the museum.
