(OLLI AT UVM PRESENTS) Government Dysfunction and the Future of Democracy with Steve Levitsky
America's democratic institutions are under severe strain. A mere 20% of Americans now trust the federal government to "do the right thing." This opening session will explore the many forces currently adding to the dysfunction of the nation's governance systems, from gerrymandering to ballooning undisclosed political spending, social media advertising, fake news, voter restrictions, and the partisan manipulation of legislative procedures. Can traditional democracy survive? Is it possible to have full national sovereignty, "liberty, fraternity, equality," and globalization simultaneously?
