Todd McGowan Full Professor Lecture

LECTURE:

Despite his prescient interpretation of capitalism, Marx based his political project on an important misreading of Hegel's dialectics. This misreading paved the way for the emergence of Stalinism and has crucial implications for our politics today. This talk will investigate how Marx went off course in his understanding of Hegel and how Hegel might offer a course corrective for contemporary politics.

BIOGRAPHY:

Todd McGowan teaches theory and film in the English Department. He is the author of "Only a Joke Can Save Us: A Theory of Comedy," "Capitalism and Desire: The Physic Cost of Free Market," "Enjoying What We Don't Have: The Political Project of Psychoanalysis," and other works. His rereading of Hegel, entitled "A Contradictory Revolution," will appear next year.
