Christian Nyampeta - Search Sweet Country
This sound performance and artist's talk will include ongoing compositions resulting from lyrical performances and public programmes of collaborative translation of songs found on YouTube where they attract widespread viewership and comments from the East African communities and diaspora across the globe.
Nyampeta sees these songs as sediments of impossible loves unleashed by a time in which displacement and extermination form essential technologies of how today¿s world has come to be. Against this, Search Sweet Country summons transregional and inter-generational movements, translations, remixes, reprises, and compositions for a lyrical performance about longing and belonging.
The concert features interludes formulated as recitations of excerpts by poets and novelists including Bessie Head, Kojo B. Laing, Ali A. Mazrui, Scholastique Mukasonga, Olu Oguibe, Nnedi Okorafor, Yambo Ouologuem, Ousmane Sembène, and Namwali Serpell in a reading that performs their writing as diagnosticians of their society.
The evening will conclude with a conversation between Nyampeta and curator Sara Garzón.
