Percussion Ensemble Concert
The Spring performance of the UVM Percussion Ensemble will feature music from Japan and Ghana, as well as John Cage¿s unusual piece ¿But what about the noise of crumpling paper¿¿ Cage wrote the piece to honor the abstract artist Jean Arp on the hundredth anniversary of his birth. Cage was inspired by Arp¿s works such as ¿According to the Laws of Chance¿ (1933) in which Arp randomly dropped black pieces of paper onto a white canvas. Cage uses both randomness (each player performs at their own tempo) and the sounds of paper in his piece.
D. Thomas Toner, conductor. Free and open to the public.
