(OLLI AT UVM PRESENTS) Confronting the Legacy of Enslavement in the United States with Rachel Judge
Alabama-based legal advocacy organization, Equal Justice Initiative, believes that slavery in the United States didn't end. It evolved. The most enduring evil of enslavement is the narrative of racial inferiority that defined Black people as less human than white people. This belief in racial hierarchy survived slavery's abolition, fueled racial terror lynchings, demanded legally codified segregration, and spawned our mass incarceration crisis. This presentation and discussion will provide an overview of that legacy, its current presence in our society, and the work EJI is doing to move us toward a new era of truth-telling about our past.
