(OLLI AT UVM PRESENTS) Writing Workshop: The Practice of Haiku

Jun 17, 2020
4:00 pm to 5:30 pm

We will immerse ourselves in the tradition of haiku, beginning with Basho, Buson, Issa, and Shiki; expanding the canon to explore the many women writers of haiku, from Chiyo-ni on: and ending with modern English-language haiku, including Jack Kerouac, Richard Wright, and Marilyn Chin. Short excerpts of essays by R.H. Blyth, William J. Higginson, and Jane Hirshfield will be provided. Each week we will consider the related forms of senryu, tanka, renga, haibun, and lune, and aim to develop a practice of writing haiku. Reading will be provided the week before. During our Zoom sessions, we will discuss the reading for the first half hour, and for the last hour participants will share the haiku (or related forms) they have written for feedback. During the last two weeks participants are invited to work on a communal renga, alternating haiku with couplets.
