Certificate FAQ / Why Participate

How many activities are required?
Body

The SAFE Certificate consists of 9 activities: 4 activities that include in-person participation, 4 online/self-paced activities, and 1 final reflection activity. Students can complete activities at their own pace throughout their time at UVM.

How long does it take?
Body

Many students can complete the SAFE Certificate within a single semester, especially if they are already participating in trainings such as ALICE, ESD, or Cat ECare. However, there is no deadline and participants may progress at their own pace.

Do I have to complete activities in order?
Body

No. Most activities can be completed in any order. The only recommended exception is the Program Feedback activity, which should be completed after all other certificate requirements have been finished.

Does the certificate appear on my transcript?
Body

No. The SAFE Certificate is a co-curricular credential and is not recorded on your academic transcript. However, it can be highlighted on resumes, LinkedIn profiles, scholarship applications, and leadership applications to demonstrate your commitment to safety, wellness, preparedness, and community engagement.

Why should I complete the SAFE Certificate?

The SAFE Certificate helps students build practical knowledge and skills that can be useful both at UVM and beyond. Participants become familiar with campus resources, support services, emergency preparedness concepts, violence prevention strategies, and opportunities to support a safer community.

I'm interested in a student leadership position. Will the SAFE Certificate help?
Body

While the SAFE Certificate is not required for any student position, it can help demonstrate initiative, engagement, and familiarity with important campus resources and safety programs. Students interested in leadership opportunities—including future SAFE Campus Advisory Board opportunities and other student leadership roles across campus—may find the certificate to be a valuable addition to their experience.

Can I receive credit for activities I've already completed?
Body

In many cases, yes. If you have already completed eligible trainings or activities that meet certificate requirements, review the activity descriptions and verification requirements within the SAFE Certificate course to determine whether you may receive credit.

What happens after I complete the certificate?
Body

Students who successfully complete the SAFE Certificate will receive information about future opportunities to become more involved with campus safety initiatives, including the SAFE Campus Advisory Board and other engagement opportunities.
