Thank an Educator Program – Fall 2021

The Thank an Educator program—sponsored by the Center for Teaching & Learning, Writing in the Disciplines, and Office of Community-Engaged Learning—gives students the opportunity to acknowledge influential educators by writing a note to the recipient to express their thanks.

In the Fall of 2021, 265 educators received messages from students. Below are selected quotes from those notes.

“She is a great lecturer; every class with her makes me more confident that this is the right field for me to be pursuing. It is easy to see that she is really passionate about and involved in what she is teaching, and that makes class much more interesting. Aside from being an amazing professor, she always goes the extra mile to make sure her students know that she cares about their wellbeing. I always really appreciate when she checks in with us during class, and her office hours have been very helpful – especially since it can be hard to feel connected to professors in such large lecture classes. She is someone that I look up to very much, and I can only hope to be like her when I am older.”

“Thank you for always putting in the extra time and effort to make sure that students were understanding the material and learning new things. This class challenged me in ways that I have never been challenged before and has helped me grow into a much better student and problem solver. I am looking forward to seeing how the skills I have learned in this class will impact future course.”

“Although you may not know it, I do not think I would still be at UVM without you. Your dedication to my success in and out of my studies motivates me so much. Knowing that I have someone there to have my back and to chat with whenever makes me all the more confident in everything I do. You have fought for me, encouraged me to push myself and also noted when I may have been pushing too far. You have taught me a lot about myself and about my passions. ”

“You've been an incredibly thoughtful and encouraging TA throughout the semester. You've made labs engaging and have gone above and beyond to explain lecture (and lab) materials. Thank you for all of your support and guidance!”

“He is engaging, fun, and really cares about his students and the class. He makes a point to know your name and is extremely helpful and responsive with questions and concerns. He made class extremely fun while also teaching a lot of dense material. He is a great person and educator and I'm so grateful to have taken classes with him.”

“I've talked about this class to anyone that will listen- I have never had time fly as quickly as it does learning under your engaging instruction. As students, we all appreciate your emphasis on the ideas that matter and not having us memorize names/pathways that don't matter, but the ones that do. Having this much passion in an instructor really brings out the passion in students- I have talked to some classmates and they all talk about how amazing this class is with the passion that is associated with it. What an AMAZING course!! ”

“This semester has been incredibly difficult for me personally, emotionally, and academically. Throughout all of that, I always look forward to coming to your class. I love the course content, your teaching style, and the empathy you have for your students. You make all the material we are covering interesting and engaging, and you uplift everyone in the room. Thank you for everything you have done for me and for the countless other students who have taken any class with you. I wish you the best and I hope to take another class with you in the future!”

“She has impacted me beyond the academic context through it, giving me tools to continue navigating how I understand my heritage, humanity, and part in the world. Something as simple as clarifying the right pronunciation of a term based on the culture in which it originated from helped me feel seen as one of the few POC in most of my classes. She has taught me more about what it is to be human beyond the identities based on rigid socio-cultural constructs, and I want to recognize her for her tireless efforts and flexibility through a very challenging pandemic age.”

“You've managed to cultivate an incredibly supportive and low-stress classroom environment, while also emphasizing learning, participation, and engagement— no small feat. Your emphasis on mindfulness has made your classroom a safe and trauma-informed space, allowing me to participate and be present, and I am incredibly grateful for that. Thank you so much for all the work you've put into organizing, and all of the feedback you've given.”
