2:00-3:00pm – Student Voices Panel Discussion: Building Classroom Connection During a Pandemic

How can faculty foster feelings of community and connection in courses, especially during the pandemic? How can faculty help students overcome feelings of isolation resulting from physical distancing, masking, and reduced opportunities for in-person connection with faculty and other students? How do these actions affect students’ experiences and learning in our courses?

A panel of current UVM undergraduate students (first years through seniors) will share their perspectives on learning across modalities this fall, with a particular focus on how their faculty have addressed needs for connection and inclusion. The panelists will reflect on ways trust and community have been built in classrooms thus far in the semester, what has been challenging or led to feelings of isolation or exclusion, and what faculty have done that has worked particularly well to foster learning. The panelists will share responses to some moderator-chosen questions and there will also be time for audience Q&A.

3:00-3:30pm – Conversations with Colleagues: Reflections on and Action Steps from the Student Panel

What did you learn from the student panelists? What ideas do you have to implement in your courses? What questions were raised that you’d like to think through with colleagues?
