Course Design Considerations for the MIXED Modality (Overview/Q&A)

This fall, faculty will be teaching courses at UVM in multiple modalities, including in-person, online, remote, and mixed instruction. The CTL developed this series of workshops to support faculty teaching within each modality to:

  • Define key course design choices
  • Consider concrete examples of possible course organizational frameworks
  • Discuss challenges and opportunities of the course modality with colleagues and CTL staff
  • Learn how to access additional resources and support

This workshop pertains to teaching in the mixed modality and will be held remotely in Teams. A mixed modality course replaces 25-75% of in-person instruction with online contact hours. Some classes designated in this modality may have the majority of students in Burlington; other classes may be composed of students predominantly learning at home, remotely.  Although the mixed modality places some constraints on how the course is delivered, you retain autonomy in how you design your courses to achieve your pedagogical goals.

This workshop is designed to support you with prioritizing the course design choices you need to make. During the workshop, we’ll present three example to consider when structuring your mixed course(s), share ideas about technologies to support your methods, and suggest ways to engage with your students.   The final 30-45 minutes of this session will be facilitated discussion, addressing your specific questions and ideas.
