Conversations with Colleagues: Large Enrollment (Mixed or In-person)
Wednesday, August 26, 2020 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Free
During the transition to remote instruction last spring, many faculty reported that they relied heavily on the collective wisdom of colleagues in adapting their courses to new modalities. Adaptation of large-enrollment courses, which can enroll 100 students or more, to a mixed or physically distanced in-person modality can present unique challenges.
For instance, how will faculty manage absences from in-person sessions due to student illness or quarantine, which are more likely to occur in larger courses? This hour offers faculty teaching large enrollment, mixed or in-person courses the opportunity to connect with colleagues to identify unique challenges of teaching large enrollment courses in these modalities and discuss potential strategies for addressing these challenges.
The mixed and in-person modalities are combined into a single session given the low number of large enrollment courses offered in the in-person format, as well as the shared challenges across these modalities (e.g., managing physically distanced in-person components of the course). This session will be an informal conversation based on prompts provided to session participants.
