Designing Open-Inquiry Laboratories: It Needn't Be Chaotic

There is growing evidence that students need to be engaged in open inquiry at all levels of science course work. Experiencing the uncertain outcomes inherent in the scientific process counters the common misconception that experiments are designed to prove hypotheses, and helps students experience, interpret, and move beyond perceived failures.

During this workshop we will:

  • Explore the research into the impacts of inquiry on student persistence and retention
  • Discuss the barriers to open-inquiry laboratories in foundation science courses
  • Discuss laboratory designs that allows open-inquiry without greatly increasing expense or chaos
  • Explore how to apply these design principles to your own labs
