Course Description: This upper-level course for fiction writers of proven ability employs a seminar/workshop format, with most classroom time devoted to manuscript discussion. May be repeated once for credit. Prerequisites: ENGS 053; minimum Sophomore standing.
Section Description: English 118: Advanced Fiction Writing operates as a workshop – we spend the bulk of our time discussing your short story drafts, taking them through multiple revisions, and then polishing them to a high gloss. We will read a selection of recently published pieces, to stimulate discussion and to give you a flavor of what’s being published nationally in the present moment, but that will be the sideshow. Your work, and the work of your peers, will be the main event. That entails reading 6 or more short stories a week and writing detailed critiques – be sure that if you enroll in this course you’re prepared to put in the time that intensive redrafting requires.
