We’re very excited to celebrate the Class of 2020 commencement in person! We’re busy getting all of the necessary details in place. Here are the details you need to know.

Important Deadlines

  • NameCoach Submission Deadline (includes official RSVP): Thursday, July 15
  • Regalia Orders: Monday, July 12 (opens) – Friday, July 30 (closes) - Extended until Thursday, August 12 for pick-up orders
  • Tickets: Augutst 6 at 11:59 pm EDT - Deadline extended until Wednesday, August 11 at 11:59pm EDT

Who

All graduates from the Class of 2020 cohort – including graduates from summer 2019, fall/winter 2019 or May 2020 - are invited to participate in the in-person August 14 ceremonies.

The university expects that participants and attendees will be fully vaccinated (including graduates). Anyone not vaccinated must wear a face covering to participate in or attend the ceremonies. All attendees are welcome to wear a face covering, but those not vaccinated must wear a face covering to attend the ceremony.

“Fully vaccinated” means it has been 14 days since your final vaccine dose. The day you received your final vaccination is considered Day 0. For a two-dose vaccine, you are considered fully vaccinated 14 days after you received your second dose. For a single-dose vaccine, you are considered fully vaccinated 14 days after receiving your one dose.

Graduates and guests should not come to the ceremony site if they are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.

Graduates will be eligible to claim up to four tickets for guests (guaranteed). See below for more information regarding guest ticketing.

What to Expect at Your Commencement Ceremony

  • Tickets are required for guests.  Participating graduates do not need tickets.
  • Graduates are asked to arrive wearing regalia for check-in at the following times below. Once graduates have checked in they will be directed to line up.
    • Check-in/Line-up Arrival Time for 9:00 a.m. Ceremony (#1): Doors open at 8:00 a.m.; all graduates must be lined up no later than 8:40 a.m. to be included in line-up.
    • Check-in/Line-up: Line-up Arrival Time for 1:00 p.m. Ceremony (#2): Doors open at 12:00 p.m.; All graduates must be lined up no later than 12:40 p.m. to be included in line-up.
    • Arrival Location for Check-in/Line-up (for both ceremonies): Multipurpose Facility (indoor track) at the Athletic Complex
      Note: Follow signage outdoors around the Athletic Complex building from the front of Patrick Gym. See the Graduate Line-Up Directional Map for details.
  • What to expect at each ceremony:
    • There will be up to 400 graduates at each ceremony.
    • The ceremony will last approximately one and a half hours.
    • There will be a student processional that will be led by faculty marshals and student banner bearers, then the graduates.
    • Graduates will process and be seated in alpha order by last name by college/school.
    • The ceremony will include remarks by UVM President, Suresh V. Garimella.
    • The focus of the ceremony will be individual graduate recognition.
    • The ceremony will be a touchless experience for graduates. There will be no handshaking. Just a lot of waving and cheering!
    • For masters or doctoral students, traditional hooding will not be part of the ceremony. Please arrive wearing your full academic regalia.
    • Each graduate will receive a namecard at check-in on Saturday, August 14 with a unique QR code to be used during the ceremony. Once scanned the QR code will initiate an audio recording of the student’s name read by a professional namereader.
    • Students will cross the stage wearing regalia and their name, degree, and major information will be displayed on screen.
    • Students will pick up a diploma cover and will pause on stage while their photo is taken.
    • GradImages, a professional photography company specializing in graduation photos, will be onsite to take photos of all in-person participants.
    • Graduates will be allowed to take their mask off briely for the photo(s) taken by GradImages.
    • Following the recognition of students, the president will confer degrees.
    • The ceremony will conclude with the recessional.
    • At the end of the ceremony during the recessional out of Patrick Gym, graduates will return the diploma cover they received during the student recognition portion of the ceremony as they have already received a diploma cover with their diploma.

Pets should be left at home for the commencement ceremonies. They will not be allowed at the ceremony site. The only exception to this would be the allowance of service animals in accordance with the University’s Operating Procedure for Service and Emotional Support Animals.

NameCoach - Important & Time Sensitive!

All Class of 2020 graduates will receive an email from academic_ceremonies@namecoach.uvm.edu on July 1 (in the afternoon) with a unique link to provide the following information. If you do not receive the email by July 2, contact academic_ceremonies@uvm.edu

  • Official ceremony RSVP to confirm your participation (required)
  • Full name or name as you would like it to be read and displayed at the ceremony
  • Name recording to help ensure that your name is pronounced correctly.

NameCoach has a firm deadline of Thursday, July 15 for submissions. It is critical for students to RSVP and provide the requested information. Graduates who do not RSVP “yes” by the deadline will not be included in the ceremony.

Live Stream

Both ceremonies will be live streamed for family members and other guests who are not able to attend in person. Links for the ceremony live stream will be added to the Class of 2020 commencement website on August 12. Additionally, all ceremonies will be recorded and posted on the Class of 2020 Commencement website the week following the ceremonies and will stay online until September 17, 2021.

Tickets

Graduates have the opportunity to claim four (4) guest tickets for their ceremony. Tickets will be required for all guests.  Graduates do not need a ticket for their ceremony.

Only graduates who responded “yes, I will participate,” by Thursday, July 15 through NameCoach will be eligible to claim tickets. Graduating students will only be eligible to claim tickets for ceremonies they are participating in.

Please note the following regarding ticketing:

  • Tickets will be available online to graduates only. Graduates may reserve up to 4 tickets (guaranteed) per ceremony they are participating in.
  • There is no fee for tickets to any of the commencement ceremonies.
  • Guests seeking tickets must connect with their graduate.
  • Tickets are ceremony specific. Guests who plan to attend more than one ceremony need a ticket for each ceremony.

The ticketing system opened on July 22. Graduates received an email from Academic_Ceremonies@uvm.edu with a unique link and instructions to claim their tickets.  The deadline to claim tickets was August 6 at 11:59 pm EDT, but the ticket deadline has been extended until Wednesday, August 11 at 11:59 pm EDT.

Graduates who have not claimed tickets by the extended deadline should email Academic_Ceremonies@uvm.edu for assistance.

Academic Regalia (Cap and Gown)

To participate in the 219th Commencement exercises, a complete outfit is required for all degree candidates (bachelor's, master's, and doctoral). If you have previously purchased regalia, you do not need to buy new regalia.

The UVM Bookstore sells regalia for bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees both through the UVM Bookstore website, as well as in-person at the Main Bookstore in the Dudley H. Davis Center. The deadline to purchase your regalia has been extended until Thursday, August 12th Regalia can be held for pick up at the Bookstore.

The UVM Bookstore at the Davis Center is open 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.  On August 14th, the UVM Bookstore at the Davis Center will be open from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm for regalia pick-up and other purchases.

Caps and gowns are made of Oak Hall's GreenWeaver material, a lightweight polyester-like material made from 23 post-consumer recycled plastic bottles.

Photographs

GradImages, a professional commencement photography business, will photograph each student in their regalia at the ceremonies on August 14. Students are encouraged to pre-register online with GradImages for easy tracking of their Commencement Day proofs.

IMPORTANT UPDATE

On Thursday, August 5, UVM made an announcement effective immediately, requiring all faculty, staff, students, and visitors to wear a mask or face covering indoors. Face coverings will be required at all times for all attendees at the Class of 2020 Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, August 14 in Patrick Gymnasium.  Please plan accordingly.
