Interested in helping people make healthy lifestyle changes?

UVM’s new 12-credit Integrative Health and Wellness Coaching Certificate program will prepare you to be an integrative health and wellness coach ready to work in a health care clinic, fitness center or business helping individuals or groups make healthy lifestyle changes. Integrative health and wellness coaches work with employee wellness programs, community health teams, youth and families, people recovering from addiction, veterans, people with disabilities, and others.

  • What Makes it Integrative?

    Integrative health involves a blend of traditional medical care and alternative and complementary care to provide the best individualized whole-person treatment. Taking care of the whole person involves many different aspects of health, including:

    • food and nourishment
    • exercise and movement
    • stress management
    • work-life balance
    • healthy environment
    • sleep and rest
    • relationships and community
    • mind-body connection
    • self-compassion

Certificate Requirements

Twelve credits must include the following:

HLTH 099 Motivational Interviewing for the Integrative Health Coach 3
HLTH 199 Integrative Health Coaching Skills Lab 3
HLTH 299 Integrative Health Coaching Practicum 2
HLTH 098 Restore, Rejuvenate, Energize 1

Choose one of the following electives:

CSD 299 Autism Spectrum Disorders: Issues in Assessment and Intervention 3
COMU 122 Family Wellness Coaching 3

Recommended course sequence:

  • Junior fall semester: HLTH 099 and HLTH 098
  • Junior spring semester: HLTH 199 and CSD 299 or COMU 122
  • Senior summer or fall semester: HLTH 299

Admission Requirements

  • 3.0 GPA
  • Ability and commitment to complete the certificate by graduation
  • Junior standing preferred

Any matriculated UVM student in good standing may apply to the certificate program.

National Board of Health And Wellness Coaching LogoThe University of Vermont is Pending Approval for Health and Wellness Coach Training & Education Program by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC). Students who complete the certificate are eligible to apply to sit for the Health and Wellness Coach Certifying Examination.

The National Board for Health & Wellness Coaches introduced a certification exam for health and wellness coaches in 2017, formally recognizing the profession and increasing demand for certified coaches.
