Eric Braun (he/him/his) serves as an Associate Director of Student Services and Retention and Academic Advisor in the College of Education and Social Services (CESS) at UVM. In this role, Eric is the primary advisor for students who transfer to CESS from other colleges and universities, and for first-time first-year (FTFY) students in the Elementary Education, Middle Level Education, and Secondary Education programs. He serves as the primary advisor for CESS HCOL students in their first and second years. Eric co-designs and facilitates academic workshops, program assessment strategies, career-related events, and retention initiatives. Eric assists with the development of annual reports, high impact practices (HIPS), and policies and operational procedures. On an ad hoc basis he assists the Director of Student Services and Retention, and the Assistant Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, with student care support and incident management.
After earning a B.A. in Sociology from DePauw University and a M.A.T. degree from Tufts University, Eric taught English language learners in Japan, Greece and Colorado. He transitioned from teacher to student affairs professional after earning a M.A. in Higher Education and Counseling from the University of Denver. Eric then spent more than two decades overseeing student service programs at small liberal arts colleges in England and the United States. The highlight of his administrative career was earning an Ed.D. degree in educational leadership from the University of Northern Iowa.
In his post-baccalaureate teacher preparation program, Eric earned an elementary education license while transitioning from college administrator to classroom teacher. He then taught students in Grades 3/4 at Bethel Elementary (Vermont), Grade 2 at Bradford Elementary (New Hampshire) and Grades 4/5 at Waterville Elementary (Vermont). Having served a wide variety of students as both a higher education administrator and elementary education instructor, Eric believes that his career path has prepared him well for the responsibilities of his current position.
Eric and his partner enjoy outdoor activities, family vacations and viewing movies with their grown sons.
