Director of Educator Licensure Programs

Before joining UVM, Ellen worked in public schools as a classroom teacher for 34 years, as a literacy coach/coordinator for 3 years, and as an assistant principal for 2 years. She has worked with student teachers for two decades and served as adjunct faculty at other colleges and universities for 25 years.

Her interests lie in the exploration of differentiated instruction, curriculum and assessment based on the various ways students access knowledge, ensuring active student engagement and literacy instruction as it relates to all content areas, and classroom management strategies that enable teachers to create an effective and safe community of learners. She also has experience and expertise in classroom management, culturally responsive instruction, growth mindset, mindfulness, trauma informed practices, restorative practices teaching, student teaching supervision, and the Vermont Professional Licensure Portfolio.

Ellen serves as facilitator of the Department of Education Student Support Team and as a member of the CESS Student Affairs Committee, the CESS Assessment and Accreditation team, and the Department of Education Leadership Team in collaboration with Director of Community Collaboration and the Department Chair. 

Previously, she served as a member of the Professional Standards Board for Vermont Educators and as a co-author of the Five Standards for Vermont Educators.
