Message from Scott Thomas and Katie Shepherd

We are pleased to share news of important leadership transitions. After five rewarding years as Dean of the College of Education and Social Services at the University of Vermont, I (Scott) will be moving to the University of Wyoming, where I have been appointed as the John P. "Jack" Ellbogen Dean of the College of Education. I am pleased that Katie Shepherd will succeed me as Dean of the College on July 1.

Together, we have accomplished a great deal over these five years. The clarity and focus brought to our work through our strategic planning and action have strengthened our programming and sharpened our impact. Our research activity has grown significantly and is more interconnected across campus than ever. We have articulated a robust Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Action Plan that has made a tangible impact on our community's composition, the physical environment in our College, and our academic programming. We have strengthened our global partnerships, increased philanthropic giving, and elevated our mission as a distinction that truly sets CESS apart nationally.

We are confident that the College is well-positioned to go through its next leadership transition. We have a great, experienced group of associate deans, assistant deans, and directors. And we have a uniquely talented faculty serving as department chairs, center and institute directors, and committee heads. Most importantly, we have an exceptional research and instructional faculty accomplishing a new and important type of work in the College. Their outstanding efforts, Provost Prelock's ongoing support of our College, and her understanding of the centrality of our role ensure the continued success of the College.

We also wish to congratulate Dr. Penny Bishop, who served as an integral member of the College's leadership team for many years. Penny has been appointed Dean of the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Maine. She will begin her position on July 1.
