In Memoriam: 1943-2005

James A. Rooney was a Research Associate at UVM under Wes Nyborg. After graduating with his doctorate, he went to the University of Maine at Orono, where he achieved tenure. At both institutions he contributed seminal papers to the field of biological physics including ultrasound bioeffects and exposimetry; at the latter he added research on nonlinear acoustics in cryogens and laser Doppler velocimetry of moving bacteria. Memberships included Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Pi Sigma as well as AAAS, ASA and AIUM. Later he moved to JPL at the California Institute of Technology to have a successful 23 year career in instrumentation and software development, intellectual property protection, and technology transfer, serving as manager of the Strategic Intellectual Assets Management Office there and receiving several NASA awards. On retiring, he did consulting on business strategies and biomedical instrumentation.
