EBE Grad Seminar Weekly Talk: An algebraic perspective to data-driven nonlinear systems

November 8, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

This week’s seminar is by Dr. Luis Espinosa, from UVM Electrical and Biomedical engineering department. Title: An algebraic perspective to data-driven nonlinear systems

Abstract:
Linear systems are the corner stone of every aspect of engineering design. The tools available for such systems is well established and generally based on the algebra of convolutions. For instance,  when linear systems are interconnected one usually never doubt that the resulting system is linear. In this talk, a framework that generalizes the algebra of convolutions for a broad class of nonlinear systems is presented. In addition, a methodology for discrete-time data-driven system analysis under this framework is provided. This is applied to the voltage and frequency regulation of an infinite bus system.

Bio:
Luis A. Duffaut Espinosa is currently an assistant professor in the electrical and biomedical engineering department at UVM. He received the B.S. degree in physics from the Universidad Nacional de Ingenería in Perú (2003), the M.S. degree in mathematics from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (2005), and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Old Dominion University (2009). He then held postdoctoral positions at Old Dominion University and Johns Hopkins University, a research associate appointment at the University of New South Wales in Canberra, Australia, and an adjunct professor position in the ECE Department at George Mason University. He has more than seventy publications including  encompassing a broad range of topics in signal processing, systems and learning methodologies. Dr. Duffaut’s research is supported by organizations such as the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy. Among his research interests are signal processing, estimation theory, control systems, stochastic processes, power systems and algebraic combinatorics.
