EBE Grad Seminar Weekly Talk: Science Commercialization: The Engine of Progress

September 13, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Over the past half-century, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has been the default analytical tool for elucidating molecular structures, identifying unknown com¬pounds, and for monitoring and controlling chemical reac¬tions. However, broad dissemination of NMR technol¬ogy has never occurred due to expensive, cumbersome, and difficult-to-use hardware. A commercial offering free of these issues would represent a new paradigm – making NMR spectroscopy practical for a diverse set of new applications. This talk will outline scientific and business challenges to commercializing miniaturized magnetic resonance products, with a specific focus on medical diagnostics and biomanufacturing monitoring. A rough framework of the ‘lean startup’ methodology will also be presented with supporting case study examples.

About Herb Ryan
Herb Ryan is cofounder and CEO of Bitome, a four-year-old, Boston-based life science instrument company commercializing miniaturized magnetic resonance technology. Bitome is developing two products, an at-home medical device as well as a monitoring tool for biomanufacturing. Prior to Bitome, Herb spent a decade developing analytical MEMS technology for life science applications.  He conducted his graduate work at the University of Virginia with a focus on micro-NMR. Subsequently, Herb was a visiting scholar at University of Southampton (UK), University of Freiburg (DE), and UCLA researching a range of analytical and physical chemistry topics. At Bitome, Herb leverages his multi-disciplinary experience to establish strategic partnerships with stakeholders in the biopharmaceutical space.

Each week, the graduate students in EBE engage with thought leaders around relevant, compelling topics. Speakers and locations will be posted on an ongoing basis.
