Vermont Psychological Services provides treatment for adults, children, and adolescents struggling with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders, trauma and stressor-related disorders, and depression.
Anxiety & Obsession/Compulsion Disorders:
For clients who experience uncontrolled worry or unwanted thoughts/actions that have negatively impacted their daily lives.
Our therapists are trained in evidence-based treatments that target many of the problems that arise from anxiety (feeling tense/nervous, physical discomfort including a racing heart rate, sweating, etc., and difficulty engaging in or withdrawing from desired/necessary activities) and Obsessions/Compulsions (distress related to unwanted/fearful thoughts, repetitive/uncontrollable behaviors, and difficulty engaging in or withdrawing from desired/necessary activities). These treatments emphasize cognitive behavioral, evidence-based treatment models including exposure-based treatment for anxiety-related symptoms, mindfulness training, and exposure-plus-response prevention for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) symptoms.
Trauma & Stress-related Disorders:
For clients who have experienced events including sexual assault, physical assault, emotional abuse, neglect, and physical injuries.
Our therapists are trained in cutting-edge treatments that target many of the problems that arise after a traumatic event including feeling on edge or jumpy, unwanted thoughts about the event, feeling down or depressed, and avoiding reminders of the event. These treatments include, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), cognitive processing therapy, behavioral activation, prolonged exposure, narrative exposure therapy, and other evidence-based treatments. We work one-on-one, with couples, or with families as determined by the needs of the individual.
Depression & Mood Disorders:
For clients who experience uncharacteristically low or high mood that has negatively impacted their daily lives.
Our therapists are trained in evidence-based treatments that target many of the problems that arise from depression (low/hopeless/empty feelings, dramatically different sleep & appetite habits, restlessness/sluggishness/discomfort, and consistently negative thoughts) and mania (overly high mood/energy, racing thoughts/speech, little need for sleep, and increased engagement in risky behaviors). These treatments emphasize the use of cognitive therapy and behavioral modification, specifically behavioral activation for depressive disorders.
Our therapists are also trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, another empirically supported approach to helping people with anxiety accomplish their valued goals. Our pre-doctoral clinicians work under careful supervision of the licensed clinical faculty for the Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Vermont. General treatment services provided to our clients are supervised under the care of any of the VPS Clinical Supervisors, led by our Director of Clinic Training Dr. Kelly Rohan (departmental profile page) and VPS Clinic Director, Dr. Karen Fondacaro (departmental profile page).
